If I start one, can I ban and mute people on it?
checks post history
…yup. “ree nobody likes my christofascism, I want my own instance because nobody will listen to me”
No offense, but go figure it out yourself because I’m not helping you. If you can’t read the lemmy docs and get it going on your own server, that’s on you.

Theoretically not needed. Elest offers managed Lemmy hosting. But it gets more expensive this way. Comparing their Hetzner offers to Hetzner VPS offers directly, about twice as expensive.
If you want to start your own Lemmy instance check out the install docs here.
If you want to set up your own community than head to the main page of any instance and poke that Create Community button on the right hand side. But judging a book by its cover with your username and post history in the 17 hours since your account has been created for you will be better off going with the former method so like minded people have a place to meet that isn’t here and can be ignored by defederation.
oh man, good call out on that. These people are always “Take back X”, thinking something has been taken from them. They never stop to think maybe it wasn’t taken… maybe they were left behind. Like, you aren’t taking it back if the majority wanted it.
Agreed, make your own instance OP and then we can all defederate from you.
Yes absolutely, please go host and live on your own instance
There are so many people who post interesting, humorous and thoughtful stuff on Lemmy and there’s you.
Step one: Post the question to ‘Ask Lemmy’
Step two: Probably won’t be happening if you thought step one was the first step.
Do you mean a community or instance?
Both. I want lots of communities inside an instance. Could I build an instance into a large thoughtful community of shared knowledge?
What you describe as a ‘large thoughtful community of shared knowledge’ sounds a lot like a cult to me. You want to isolate yourself and your followers from the rest of the world because you know most people couldnt be kept there otherwise. You want to misrepresent your instance by removing anyone who doesnt agree with your (probably hurtful extremist) views and that just fuels the fire. I think most people arent inherently bad, just driven by their circumstances and worldviews, but if you dont allow opinions that dont match your own, you cant grow as a person and stay stuck in your own thought loops. Please try taking a different approach and maybe try relating a little to their arguments and why they react like this instead of dismissing them instantly.
You can try.
If your first idea of what to do with an instance is ban people, immediately followed by muting people, maybe the fediverse is not for you. If blocking users and communities from your own profile isn’t good enough for you, please leave.
Please do so I can block you and your instance, but you’re gonna have to figure out how to shoot yourself in the foot yourself (though that seems to be a unique skill you have)
Go touch grass plz…
Yes.
Is this an honest question?
If yes: Read the info here: https://join-lemmy.org/docs/administration/administration.html
That is the installation guide.
If you’re not that tech-savy I recommend using a self-hosting platform like YunoHost or Cosmos.
You have to at least put some effort in and google it and read the instructions yourself. Everyone is invited to run their own instance of Lemmy, and so are you.
You’d need a domain and some sort of server. Any VPS will do or some 24/7 online device at home if you can do port forwards on your home internet connection.
I’d invite you to have a look at it. If you’re really interested, feel free to ask follow-up questions.
Regarding your other question: Yes, you can.
If I would say what I think I’d be banned for 6 months but generally could you please take your mitochondria on an indefinite vacation?
