Hello everyone,

@[email protected] created [email protected] to synchronize efforts to promote the Fediverse on existing social media (e.g. that Reddit thread on /r/Technology which got a few people joining Lemmy)

Spaduf wasn’t aware of the existence of [email protected] , which is an existing community focused on the internal growt on the Fediverse, mostly between mods and regular posters trying to make Lemmy/Mbin/Piefed communitied grow.

To avoid confusion between the two communities, we are thinking about a potential new community to replace [email protected], but with a different name.

Potential options we came up with:

What do you all think? Do you have any other ideas for the name of that new community?

Edit to clarify as it seems it wasn’t as obvious in the post: the objective is to keep [email protected] with its current focus: growth of communities already here (so more internal), while the new community would be about advocacy and promotion of the Fediverse on other places (so more external).

Having two communities seems better as people busy with keeping their communities active aren’t automatically interested in promoting the Fediverse externally, and vice versa.

In general, I think communities shouldn’t splinter until there’s a need. IMO both efforts should just use [email protected], and title posts in a way that makes the distinction clear. They’re both about growing the Fediverse in the end. If and when it becomes too much to keep in the same comm, then you’d split it up. That’s just my opinion as an internet rando though 🤷

Why not literally just here? Growth news are already posted here and the people subbed to this will care about the concept. It’s by far the biggest of the lot too.

What they are doing is essentially promotion. So that, or something along the line is more appropriate.

[email protected] is the mis-named one. “To discuss how to grow and manage communities on Lemmy” is not really about evangelizing the whole fediverse to people outside. It could be more outward focused, but if you look at the posts in that community you’ll see it’s very much not what is being discussed.

    Obligatory https://xkcd.com/927/

I wouldn’t call it anything with just “support” in the name, or I’d imagine you’re going to get a lot of tech support questions regarding Fediverse software.

And keep in mind the attention span on the internet is reading half of the title of something. So the topic of conversation has to be very clear from the name alone.

Or maybe you want to join efforts? It’s still not clear to me whether both are about the same thing, just on different instances. I think both fedigrow and growthefediverse are good names that make it clear what it’s about. What about fedipromotion? or promotethefediverse? But I don’t think my ideas are as good…

One strategy that I’d like to specifically promote is fediverse users calling attention to spaces of the internet where people are talking about the fediverse but there’s relatively few users there that can share their experience.

To that end I’ve been considering things like:

    • Fedimigration Reinforcements
    • Fedimigration Support Team

Keep in mind that whatever name we pick will also be the hashtag that the Mastodon contingent of this project will end up using. As it stands, they would see posts from this community under #growthefediverse

Honest question: what is the goal here? As a user, I don’t care much about the fediverse as a concept. As a Reddit refugee, I love Lemmy and that is worth promoting as far as I am concerned. I was never into twitter, and mastodon doesn’t appeal to me. But if people want to promote it, go for it. As a techie, the fediverse is an interesting concept, but not one you’re going to get the general public interested in.
