I’ve seen this too much in the media and other places, and I am kinda sick of seeing people get unfairly criticized or sidelined.
In a vacuum, I wouldn’t consider “diversity hire” to be a slur. However, in colloquial use by racists and bigots, it is definitely used as such much in the same way they have appropriated “DEI” as a slur.
To clarify, I mean the terms themselves used in the proper context. Calling someone a diversity hire, DEI hire, affirmative action hire, etc is 100% appropriating those terms as slurs because it calls into question the target’s qualifications by insinuating they were only hired to tick a box.
why don’t we question the competence or qualifications of non-POC hires? Like why are non-POC hires not “cronyism hire” or “familiarity hire”?
We totally do:
- Familiarity hire: We call those ‘nepo babies’ or something related to nepotism.
- Cronyism Hire: Not sure there’s a single term for it, but I (and probably others I’d imagine) just literally call them “cronies”.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Affirmative_action also comes to mind.
They are, it’s called “Nepotism”.
But nepotism only relates to family or friends, I believe. Not necessarily to someone who’s unrelated. That’s why I suggested the term “familiarity hire” or “cronyism hire”
The phrase “diversity hire” implies that they were not hired for their abilities. It attacks the person looking for a job rather than one making the hiring decision. So yes, it is a slur.
The purpose of phrases like “diversity hire” is to dehumanize and marginalize without ever having to learn anything about the person you don’t like and you won’t bring about inclusion by embracing those tactics, but it is noticed and called out, but it is done as a conversation and against the individual doing the hiring, not against a group of people who were hired and did nothing wrong.
At least that has been my experience.

Just curious what you’re going to do about it, if anything?
Hire POCs, raise awareness regarding double standards
If you “hire POCs” just to spite people who are opposed to diversity hiring, you are proving their point.
I didn’t say it would be done as a spite
“We are all family in this company” -> We don’t have non-white relatives.
We are all family
so youre going to treat me like shit and expect free work from me
Now that is the bonus we promised on hire.

If you know and understand all these abbreviations and special terms, then you are deep in the mud already. To know if this or that may be a slur cannot rescue you anymore.
I suggest to look for a whole new circle of friends.
It’s not my circle of friends, and I am not taking about myself. I am about talking other people and speaking for other people
