I’m having a strong urge lately to connect to themes of isolation and melancholy.
Anyone else enjoying this stuff?
Here’s a list of some that I enjoy. Also, the strongest imagery I have for this is a little island on another planet, with meadows, a little wooden house, pools of water, etc. while seeing the star-studded universe above.

Not my thing but I thought of the famous and frequently parodied “Scream” painting.
The colours and a lot of aspects fit, but I find the expression of the face, with the hands pressed against the head goes in a completely different direction with what looks like panic or despair.
One half-finished racing game that boasted having the largest open world at the time on consoles.

And it looked impressive in some biomes with natural disasters, but other than that it’s miles and miles of (comfy?) desolation and boredom. If not for scattered remains of gameplay, it could’ve been it’s own art thing.

- A Wizard of Earth Sea, by Ursula Le Guin. I think a lot of her stories have that vibe, but that one’s probably the strongest in that regard.
I thought of another one: Never Cry Wolf
I saw this way back when it was first released, and boy has it stuck with me. That said, my memories of it might have gotten fuzzy in the last, what, 42 years (😳)
A biologist goes to the tundra to investigate why caribou are dying. Wolves have been floated as the culprits. He is very isolated. Life happens. I don’t remember it as a generally upbeat movie, but it was a good, well-made movie that made me think quite a lot.
That sounds really spot on! I’m feeling cozy thinking about it :)
David Lynch’s Eraserhead immediately popped into mind. There is very little dialog and the main character is almost entirely wrapped in his own thoughts. Also just a very strange and surreal movie. It feels almost like you’re not meant to see it.

The crew are scattered across a hostile planet, so it does deal with isolation. And I think “melancholy” is a pretty good description for how it made me feel. Plus, it’s visually gorgeous and bizarre.
Check out “the taxpayers” specifically their song “I love you like an alcoholic” although, all the songs on the album thats from are good.
