If you have to add an out-of-place question mark to “comply with a rule”, chances are you are not complying with the spirit of that rule.

You had a short question! The only reason it didn’t fit is you wanted to add too much context ahead of time and MADE it not fit. The context could have come after.

You already edited three times, once to complain about people not liking the question. You have the time to respond to me, you have the time to fix your mistake. The fact you aren’t makes everything you’re doing intentional.

Editing is harder than replying and i did think about it and the question still wouldn’t fit.

“What are the most vile things you would do if there were no consequences?” That’s all you need. Everything else didn’t need to be there, and still doesn’t.

You are actively making this post terrible.

4chan, lol that was a place I visited about 20 years ago to be edgy in school…

Your question about what the worst, vile and dispicable thing I would do if the world had no rules?

I am 36, I don’t harbor any such thoughts at all, my life has allways been better after doing good rather than doing bad stuff, this is both mentally and physically, if I do good, most people will be less inclined to do bad stuff to me, some will even help me when I need it.

This entire thread is way too edgy for my liking, but I will give you some advice, stop dwelling on the hate you have, it will only being you down in the long run.

The funny thing about a no rules scenario is it necessitates no people.

Once you have more than one person you have rules, and politics. The most basic rules are simple survival mode, just like animals in the wild, don’t mess with other people unless your willing to fight and die for it.

You stack up more rules the more you cooperate with others. Just as a way to cooperate, set norms, expected behaviors.

I think lots of the sophomoric no rules scenarios are just power fantasies, i.e. what would they like to do if there were no consequences.

In real life there are always consequences, even if there isn’t a central authority

Would you really kill and torture though? Just because there are “no rules” doesn’t mean there are “no consequences”.

Anonymous message boards like 4chan where people can say anything will obviously bring the worst out (because there are no consequences), and are not at all representative of how society might function without “rules”.

Put those people in a room together and watch them try and survive? …well, maybe 4chan isn’t a good representation for my theoretical scenario. But nonetheless, you put people in a room and one of them murders someone, you bet the others will team up to prevent that person from murdering again. A “rule” isn’t necessarily born out of it, but rather a response to the need to survive that’s rooted in us all. And because of this need, social structures begin to form from these responses (people grouping together to figure out how to prevent others from murdering).

You don’t need an overarching power structure telling you to not murder people. Humans will respond accordingly whenever there are those who threaten that innate drive to survive and thrive.

Your making a pretty big assumptions. There are many examples of humans in survival scenarios trapped together where they don’t tear each other and eat.

It is possible, but its so rare its remarkable when it does happen. Humans are a cooperative species, our super power is working together. Even with people we don’t like very much (small town america is proof you can get along with people you hate).

We have phrases like ‘and the band played on’ because humans in adversity are extremely cooperative.

Remove a government, remove a police force, and you still have people, just getting along. Rural communities, hikers, explorers, sailors, get along together, more or less, in broad strokes without the constant watchful eye of sauron.

It isn’t control that makes people behave, its that people just want to get on with their lives and the less drama the better.

I would suggest that in the absence of “consequences or rules”, an internal sense of honesty and decency would keep people on the straight and narrow.

See also Peelian principles , aka policing by consent.

The Peelian principles describe the philosophy that Sir Robert Peel developed to define an ethical police force. The principles traditionally ascribed to Peel state that:

    • Whether the police are effective is not measured on the number of arrests, but on the lack of crime

    • Above all else, an effective authority figure knows trust and accountability are paramount. Hence, Peel’s most often quoted principle that “The police are the public and the public are the police.”

Do you think that religion, or societal customs, or something else, is what keeps people honest?

Penn Jillette says he gets the “What’s-to-keep-you-from-raping-and-killing” question all the time from religious people. It is a ham-fisted challenge to atheism, and Jillette has no trouble crushing it with rhetorical roundhouses. For example: “My answer is: I do rape all I want,” he told an interviewer. “And the amount I want is zero. And I do murder all I want, and the amount I want is zero. The fact that these people think that if they didn’t have this person watching over them that they would go on killing, raping rampages is the most self-damning thing I can imagine. I don’t want to do that. Right now, without any god, I don’t want to jump across this table and strangle you. I have no desire to strangle you. I have no desire to…rape you. You know what I mean?”
