  • Preface: All seafood makes me violently ill. I wish it weren’t so, but here we are.

While living in Switzerland we went to an ikea and found what I thought to be spreadable cheese in a toothpaste type tube. For reference lots of stuff over there comes in those types of tubes. Why not cheese?

I was so excited to get home and immediately tore the cap off and squeezed a giant dollop of what my mouth expected to be something like cheez whiz.

NOPE. NOPE FUCKING NOPE. It was some kind of fish paste with roe…

I puked for like 30 minutes straight and couldn’t get that taste out of my mouth until we found some kirsch liqueur that I also hate, but whose taste will overpower anything.

    Picture related: The culprit

  • Atheist here. Married a Christian who was into missions, taught Sunday school, etc…

Love is love and we don’t choose who we fall in love with.

I never once tried to convert her, or call out her beliefs. But over time (she was from a small religious (mennonite) town) she came to see on her own how the indoctrination was just a cover for a lot of evil shit that went down in the church, and in its name.

She is no longer Christian, and veers towards agnosticism, but when pressed would say she is now more aligned with animism, or the idea that nature is the only ‘face’ of a god that is not a conscious being, but is just the culmination of all the processes in nature.

  • Neighborhoods full of community became individuals in houses.

I’m about 12 years older than you and what you have written pretty much sums up my life on the outskirts of the South Shore of Montreal. All those Creeks are gone. The train tracks that used to support 20 kids playing everyday have been fenced off. The BMX track is now a golf course. And the forests are all reduced to a line of single trees dividing subdivisions.

But the quoted bit is the part that hurts my heart the most. I grew up in a community. When I had my kids I created a community for other kids and their families to feel part of.

We would do small cookouts, babysit for each other, play music together. Once in awhile someone would pop out a projector and bring it outside and we’d have a community movie night.

My kids’ kids don’t see this. They live in basically the same place but the community left and only the individuals remain behind.

  • Yup.

I smoked a pack a day for roughly 30 years. My night time breathing was getting ugly and my wife would sometimes get woken up by the sound of my wheezing.

Every method of quitting failed me except vaping. I started as most do with a high nicotine vape juice that tasted like tobacco, but after about a month I swapped and started going lower and lower nicotine and change the flavor from tobacco to a custardy type.

2 months of that got me off the cigs. Two more months got me down to zero nicotine. Two or three more months after that I was done.

I have been off cigs for 7 years.

My breathing no longer feels wet or difficult at night. And My yearly health tests all come back the same as a non-smoker.
