Hello! Ive had my LG Smart TV for almost 2 years now and i have some issues with it. Apart from the obvious data collection and shady opt-out “do not sell my data” settings theres just a bunch of other magical issues with Jellyfin, WebOS and their apps that annoy me.
Does anyone have any alternative Smart TV OS, tips or tricks? Would love to run another OS entirely that is privacy friendly but I dont even know if its possible.
Serious question: what options are there for non-smart TVs these days? I remember looking when I bought a new TV a few years ago, and EVERYTHING was “smart”.
I bought an LG one recently. Works great, no hassle. I have no idea if it has smart features, because I just plugged it in and it worked. Never connected it to the Internet.
I think I did have some trouble with the initial setup menu because of weird button selection behavior. And I was happy to see you can turn off the startup animation.

As far as I know, these have no smart functions. I believe the Walmart site carries them.
Interesting. Doesn’t look like that brand is available outside North America, but maybe there is hope?
Someone had mentioned they contacted one of the majors and said his wife was on dialysis and a heart machine, could they give him instructions to disable the wifi on the TV and they did, with the caveat that it was a permanent thing. So you could try that with a regular smart TV if you can’t get these.
It’s not smart if it’s not connected to anything. Only HDMI.
if it even lets you change source without being connected that is …
I would ask for a refund because it’s a broken TV. I’m not kidding, who the fuck accepts this?
Which TV doesn’t let you change source without being connected to WiFi? Cause whatever brand that is you just don’t buy it. Also never heard of any of the major brands doing that at all
Roku TVs did that

But if you don’t have it connected to internet it works as intended. It says so in the article. So unless they force you to connect to internet to switch inputs it’s nbd if you never have it connected to internet at all.
That wasn’t the question, but sure.
Don’t buy a tv. Buy a “monitor”. Add your own external tv tuner box, and other smart sticks externally. At that point your “tv” is just a display.
Yes, it costs more, but you’re not paying with your data.
My cheap ass TV from 2019 is 55 inches. How much is a 55 inch monitor? Or a 65 in monitor if I want to upgrade to a bigger size in the future?
And who is making 80 inch monitors? Most people don’t want small ass displayed or have the ability to buy a 4k 50 inch monitor.
What a terribly limited and short sighted response.
Commercial series displays. Most of those now have the same (well, same base at least) OS on them though.
I’d say Sharp/NEC would be the only “dumb” professional series displays, at least of the major manufacturers.
You’ll be at around $1500-$3000 for a nominal 80" (they make a 75" and an 86").
Show me a link to a 4k 120 60+ inch monitor. I want to know what you’d specifically consider a reasonable alternative. None of this vague bullshit.
You realize I’m not the same person, right? So maybe change the attitude a bit.
120Hz wasn’t in your original question. For that you’d need to be in direct view LED territory, which is going to be in the $150k+ range, like an FE012I3 (at least with Sharp/NEC).
Sony has a line of Bravia post production OLEDs, the FWD-##A95Ls ( the number is the sizing) which is going to be a phenomenal production quality display. $7k-$10k.
LG and Samsung are all WebOS and Tizen respectively, but the versions are different than the consumer version. So its “smart”, but not in the same way as consumer editions - sampling content and other such things would be a legal nightmare for them. So if you want “smart” but not “consumer smart” you can go that route, but expect about twice the price.
Edit: I suppose I can toss Planar into the mix here, different business purpose and youre not buying them at best buy. They are more of a 24x7 operation design. I don’t think 120hz is on the sale list yet though, those will be part of the UltraRes series.
