The footage shows the young women, all of them stunned and some bloodied, being bound and bundled into a jeep.
One of the gunmen can be heard shouting back in Arabic: “You are dogs! We will step on you, dogs!”
Another gunman tells a captive: “You’re beautiful.”

Note that the subtitles here are confirmed fake.
The official israeli editor made rapey shit up hoping that nobody in the entire world speaks arabic.
Never thought knowing Palestinian Arabic could become so useful. Sabaya is a very normal word to use for youngish women. Maybe in high Arabic it is a more specific term but in every day language no one in their right mind would think about anything related to pregnancy, that’s just ridiculous. Maybe it’s implied, just like it’s implied in “girl” or “young woman”, but that’s just a very desperate attempt to make it sound more than it actually is.
More background:
In Fusha (high Arabic) there are allegedly like 50 different names for a camel depending on what it’s up to. E.g. it has a different name when it’s drinking, sitting, pregnant, young, old, … very similar to cattle terminology in English: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cattle_terminology
Why I’m mentioning this isn’t because I want to equate women to cattle (please don’t read this out of my comment, that’s not at all what I’m saying just to be very clear). I’m saying it because Arabic is a very rich and complex language. I really don’t know much about Fusha but it can very well be that sabaya means something more specific there in terms of what kind of women these sabaya are exactly. Anyway, even if that were the case in every day language no one would actually try to specifically mention that some woman is capable of getting pregnant.
I suspect that they knew it they would have to correct it, but did it anyway because the lie would be spread more than the correction.
Confirmed where?

“Reuters has removed subtitles on the video as there are discrepancies between the text on screen and audio translated by Reuters,” the news agency said in its release notes.
Thanks, but it seems a lot more complicated than just saying they’re “confirmed fake”. It sounds like there’s a legitimate debate over the best way to translate a word that doesn’t have a direct equivalent in English.
Whenever one of those israeli war crime videos get posted all the Zionists are up in arms about how the translations need to be quadruple checked for accuracy.
But when a video of Hamas gets posted where israel provably falsified the subtitles to push their rape fanfic, somehow it’s “worthy of debate”.
There no debate here. The subtitles from israel are completely wrong and in no way match what was said.
I mean correct translation is very difficult. I don’t really know what you’re referring to here but none of the links posted here suggest the translation was completely wrong. Just that there is a nuanced subtext that isn’t totally clear in this context.
But I mean this is Israel Palestine so fuck nuance, let’s just kill the other tribe and be done with it, am I right?
I mean well derp a derpa dee
Do your parents know you took their iPhone?
there really isn’t. Learn arabic then come back
Do you speak Arabic? How would you translate it?
So far it’s just angry terminally online people angrily shouting which I don’t put much weight on. The experts listed in the articles disagreed so how am I a non-Arabic speaker to know which is correct?
I do. The term صبيّة (sabiyya) is a term for younger girl, sometimes used in the context of slavery or captivity in the past. They’re often said by levantine arabs. The guy in the video said صباية (Sabaya) which is plural for the word, as the israeli soldier girls were young. It’s only sexual if you think that referring to someone as a woman while in captivity necessitates sexual violence.
Some refer to the ISIS use of the term in their official documents. Note that ISIS is bat shit insane, and were condemned by Everyone, including probably hamas (Im not looking this up cause Im probably right).
I dont want to defend hamas but come on man. Israelis love to look for anything that makes them look like irrational animals.
I have little faith in Israeli propaganda and about as little in online ideologues. But thanks for sharing your knowledge in any case, since you sound like you are speaking from a place of knowledge, unlike the other commenters.
Lol the Internet is international, bruh, of course they speak Arabic.
Big brain moment
Paywalled, but the word does have some subtle sexual connotations: https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2024/05/israel-hamas-female-captives-sabaya-translation/678505/
EDIT: Try this link
Okay Graeme wood of the atlantic. jesus christ I cant believe hasbara got to lemmy
They’ve been here lol
Lol I’m neither Graeme Wood nor am I associated with Israel in any way. At the start of this conflict I was much more pro-Israel but it’s been clear that they don’t care one iota about minimizing civilian causalities (or worse, they do care but in the opposite direction). But being anti-Hamas doesn’t make you pro-Israel - sometimes there are conflicts where both armed sides absolutely suck and civilians are stuck in the middle, and this is one of them.
you can be anti hamas without lying too. The problem is that the atlantic is a zionist publication and they grasp at anything to make their case.
Take it from an arabic speaker. Saying this ONE WORD said to SOLDIERS OF AN ENEMY ARMY has sexual connotations is the equivalent of saying the english words “captive” or “prisoner” mean you’re going to rape that person.
Well if you’re a prisoner going to Guantanamo it does mean exactly that.
It’s really weird how they emphasise this “rape and abuse of women” line when things are looking bad for them. It’s like they see this as the thing that generates the most outrage, and all they have left say in their defense is “Hamas is evil.” So they try to make everyone focus on the emotional response to the horrors on October 7th so it “feels” like this is a fair justification.
They have had this footage for over 7 months. And it just so happens that they sat on it until now, and released it shortly after the ICJ ruling. Hmmmmmmm
They seem to think they can distract everybody with this like they’re jingling keys for a baby
This is horrible no matter what. It doesn’t justify genocide. Palestine needs to be a state in the UN. We need to gain the people’s trust and hopefully they will remove Hamas. Continues bombing will only make them want Hamas because they will fight israel.
Hamas are rapists and murderers.
They started this war to cause maximum casualties…to their own people.
That’s why they fight in the most populated areas, the schools, hospitals. That’s why they prolong the war.
Imagine being stuck between Hamas, who uses your suffering to increase support for their cause, and Israel who is more than happy to kill you anyway. And rather than sympathise with these poor people you take to the internet to defend the murderers in the IDF just because the other side is also bad.
Imagine if you were close enough to your humanity to feel for the people suffering instead of just running transparent PR for the ones killing thousands and thousands of children
Not many people will look at a video of people kidnapping women to rape and think…I need to comment to defend people like that…good on you for lowering the bar that much
I think if you can’t see the implications of this in the current context you are lost. This focus on the horrendous crimes that took place on October 7th is being used to justify a genocide. Of course it was horrendous. But ever since then we have seen a continuous stream of horrendous crimes, and narrowly focusing on the 1,200 victims of October 7th is a game to distract attention from the 35,000 + mainly innocent people who have been brutally killed in the almost 8 months since then and still being killed now.
This story on it’s own is about despicable crimes and there would be nothing to object to. The wider context and specific timing make it more sinister
Weird. This post has been here for 9 hours and no one has claimed this is fake or Israeli lies? Best to ignore this part of the narrative completely right?
Justified genocide as collective punishment achievement unlocked!
Nobody denies there are two armed forces in combat with each other. What people are objecting to is the lack of regard to anyone caught in the middle, especially from the IDF.
As for soldiers being taken as prisoners, it sounds completely normal in war. I’ve not looked at this footage as I’ve no desire to watch violent images. Maybe this treatment is brutal, but being captured by the enemy is rarely a fun affair.
OP constructed a strawman to attack, because Israels genocide is logically indefensible.
Why especially from the idf? I’m not really on any side I’m just having a lot of trouble understanding the apparent double standard
Literally the last story I read before looking at my inbox.
It’s just one of many. Everyday civilian refuges are targeted deliberately. Civilian! These people can’t go anywhere. They are physically trapped, the borders are shut and they are getting wiped out.
Israel has basically impenetrable missile defense. They are so much stronger than Hamas it’s not even close. Yet they target civilians day after day after day. Israel will state they were targeting Hamas with precision weapons, but the end result is dead families.
Right now your the narrative and this is how you chose to set the tone.
What ho? Is that projection I hear?
