A leader of the scandal-plagued far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) lashed out at European parties of a similar ilk on Saturday after the AfD was expelled from its European Parliament group.
In a blow ahead of next month’s EU-wide elections, the AfD was ejected this week from the Identity and Democracy (ID) group, an alliance of populist right-wing parties in the parliament.
AfD co-leader Tino Chrupalla hit out at the far-right party of Marine Le Pen in France and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. He said he would not allow them to influence AfD policies.
Le Pen’s National Rally is a member of the ID group. The party quickly began distancing itself from the AfD after Maximilian Krah, an AfD candidate for the European Parliament, said not all members of the SS were criminals.
The Schutzstaffel (SS), was a major paramilitary organization under Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party. Krah’s Nazi comments were published in Italian media earlier this month.
Chrupalla characterized Meloni, one of Europe’s most powerful figures on the far right, as actually a moderate pushing Brussels’ agenda. He claimed that since Meloni took office in 2022 she has turned in favour of more migration and sending weapons to Ukraine.
“Not all SS members were criminals” undoubtedly a true statement but not a perspective I’d ever want to defend. If there was some former SS member that had done extremely altruistic things and was being villified purely for their prior affiliation, I think we could have a conversation… but, in the abstract, I think it’s fair to assume all SS members were criminals since that was clearly the vast majority of them.
Also, what a weird fucking take from an asshat that thinks all “immigrants” are criminals… and, of course, understand that by “immigrants” he means brown people - whether fresh off the boat, permanent residents, naturalized citizens, or second/third/…/fifty-first generation not white people.
You know, I have a hunch that neofascists and neonazis are not good people.
Seriously though, we’ve had the same discussion in the 80s about the Wehrmacht (“Wehrmachtsausstellung”) and “it wasn’t all bad!” is almost a meme at this point. And we will have the same discussion again very soon. Maybe some of the Jews actually were bad people and totally deserved their fate?
These are fascists. If there is any idea, person, historical period that reinforces their self-victimizing superiority complex, they will take it. And they will do what every conservative thinker does: stop thinking if the current result fits your ideology.
Leader of party revolving around excluding people, cries that his party is excluded by group of other parties revolving around excluding people.
“I never thought they would eat my face” sobbed the woman who voted for the leopards eating people’s faces party.
