Yeah, some nouns are already taken, that’s fair. Like “shafted”.

Almost forgot “jalla” or “jallamekk”, originally adopted by Norwegian military from a middle eastern word for “fast”, meaning a quick and dirty, but not particularly high quality, solution.
According to John Oliver you can use any noun, like for example “gazeboed”.
A classic! I don’t know how I forgot to mention that one, I even coincidentally explained it to someone earlier today!
I’ve found that the meaning depends on regional differences in both English and Norwegian, and as a result I never use “next Sunday”. I say “Sunday in a week and a half” or the date instead.
Waste of materials. Norwegians build air castles.
Some Norwegian politicians have completely ruined this expression, and now use it to mean “a really big favor”.
It’s almost as annoying as when Americans say they “could care less” when they mean the opposite.
In Norwegian we say “helt sylta” (“completely pickled”) when we have a very stuffy nose. I tried using that idiom when calling out of work in the US once, and was informed that I had just told them I was too drunk to go to work!
In Norwegian we say either “you shit on your leg”, “you shit on the shovel” or “you shit on the drawbar (of a horse-drawn carriage)” for the same thing.
And if you’re “out bicycling” you’re making a mistake, like if you’re doing a crossword and you realize that some of the previous words definitely weren’t right, or you’re doing math and you realize that you definitely made a calculation error earlier because nothing makes sense.
If someone says you’re “all out on the field” (“helt på jordet”) it means they think what you just said was completely wrong.
The Norwegian equivalent of “a hard act to follow” is “like (ski) jumping after Wirkola”, a ski jumper who was definitely way better than both you and everyone else.
And if there are owls in the moss (“ugler i mosen”) something is pretty fishy.
If at first you fail, try again AD ABSURDUM
I noticed I had dropped a piece of paper, and one of the wheels was on top of it. I tried to do a little hop to quickly pull the paper out, and somehow I landed on the hand pulling the paper.
So technically I more hopped onto more than ran over the hand, but I took some narrative liberties for comedic effect.
Not the most recent, because this happened years ago, but I once managed to run over my own hand with an office chair – while I was sitting on it.
If this had come off as a genuine complaint and the waiter was covering their ass, there would be a serving of fries on that plate. If someone is unhappy you have to go a little above and beyond, otherwise they’ll just stay unhappy about having had to call it out.
In this case the waiter clearly took it as a joke, and decided to have a little fun themselves. I hope the plate came with a shiny dome on it and the waiter opened it with a grand gesture.
Having worked for a shitty company like Theranos or whatever is not great for your resume. You want people to read your resume before the company name is tainted by bad press.
The way I read this, the suicide looks unrelated to the drug allegations? The guy who ended up taking his own life tested negative for drugs, while everyone else in the story is in trouble. Really weird article. Did they just mash all that stuff together in the same article to get enough length?
I’m not sure what you’re planning to discover by that. What makes modern finance (particularly stocks) so hard to manage is that it’s very emotional. People invest based on what they believe in, and when they get scared they sell. Is the goal to anticipate this and see if the AI can replicate it exactly, or are you expecting it to do it better somehow? If it’s the latter, it would be very hard to measure success, because you can’t measure how the market would react without involving the market.
It’s also a volume thing. By the time I reach a reddit comment thread what I wanted to say has already been said, and if I say it again my comment will drown in a sea of heavily upvoted comments. On lemmy you can be several days late to the party and still get both upvotes and responses.
