  • They are also way too small in terms of storage given that they don’t support external cards (Apple is similar). Google/Apple definitely want buyers to also buy their subscription storage services or pay the high premium for the next storage level.

I’m on an XR right now and it feels older, but still very much usable. I wish companies offered options to only get security patches instead of having to buy new phones every few years, that’s the 1 thing I hope Google keeps around and doesn’t walk back in the future.

  • Out of curiosity as an owner of a QNAP NAS, how did it go out? Any signs it was in its last legs? Now that I’ve used one, the form factor is the only thing better than most options out there when I got it.

Nowadays all QNAP, Sinology and other NAS vendors supposedly offer a lot of extra value with their cloud options, but I find them a sure way to get hacked based on the average company’s investment in security (I work in IT, it is a sad affair sometimes) combined with all the ransomware specifically targeting them due to old packages they rely on = I’ll build my next system from the ground up, even if the initial cost is higher and the result is uglier.

  • It might be worth adding that some people might find him (and similar long form content) verbose if they are not into the topics. I watch probably most of his episodes, but some people in my life don’t vibe with his those. The same people did not appreciate the 7 color e-ink display I had been tinkering around with until I made it display a dog pic, so it’s also about how the topic relates to what you already like.

  • It’s shit for automating things and especially useless outside the Apple ecosystem, but it does offer the option to turn off sharing.

Apple ID -> Find My -> Share My Location

Since it’s closed source it’s possible they still capture the location and I would t trust it, but in practice anyone that you’ve allowed to see your location (for an hour, day, while on-route) gets a “location unknown” on their app of the toggle is off.

  • Great points, as someone who is very happy with their current home automation and services, checking in the config files to a git repo was the critical step. Also backup volumes since many containers tend to store state in some binary or internal DB. At the very least try restoring the config to verify you have what’s needed. The containers should start even if they have no media on it.

In terms of tinkering not being fun anymore. That’s okay, sometimes you need a break.

A point that is sometimes not brought up enough in my opinion is to plan for loses. What can you afford to lose if you can’t backup everything (due to price, etc.)? config files and photos or personal data are relatively small (compared to something like a media library) and should be prioritized.
