4get is a metasearch engine that gets results from other engines, and strips away all of the tracking parameters.
One feature I use a lot is the ability to select which search engine you want to scrape from easily, so I can quickly toggle between results from Google and than duckduckgo, bing, etc. You get wildly different results.
There are dozens of people who host servers for the public to use, although you can self host. The creator of 4get hosts an instance here https://4get.ca/. I host an instance here https://4get.lurx.net/ (Server in Cali) and you can find dozens of other servers and the country they are hosted in https://4get.ca/instances

But it’s been a thing with a lot of open source software the last years to have weird anime and hentai bullshit¹ in them and asking the developers to to think twice renders a wall of horny geeks calling names.
Edit: ¹as in sexually suggestive and unacceptable in a professional setting, and that most people outside the bubble find inappropriate or disturbing or even offensive

been hosting an instance of this for a while and it’s pretty good at what it does. but like others said, the dev is a total edgelord. a while back the readme also made fun of hnhx’s potential suicide (dev of LibreX who vanished from most platforms one day). hope it was removed because they realized how awful that was and not just because of backlash.

Self hosted or not, I refuse to support a dev that’s okay with racial slurs, gay bashing and women hate.

Yup, I’m not sure how accurate this is since I’ve never used SearX but I find this funny, from the creator of 4get.

That FAQ… This project’s devs are so far out of the realm of what a common Lemmy user would want to support.
Take a look at SearXNG, it’s run by sane devs, and it’s a better project, too.
This person sounds like a hop skip away from fellating Trump and Putin (but in a “nohomo” way), so I wouldn’t trust this project in the short or long term.
They want to eventually make an “unbiased” index, n which case if that were the case, I’d just search for things using Fox News or Russian Times. Maybe Truth Social too. They have tough competition.

Well, if that’s the case, every public SearxNG instance I’ve checked out seems to have the same bad settings.
I don’t know about the instances you have tried, but by default any user can change the search settings afaik.
