Signal is not federated. Matrix or xmpp is the federated chat
Signal is centralised and most certainly NOT part of the fediverse
this meme is sending the wrong signal
What is suggested alternative?
probably matrix. it’s decentralised, but not with the same protocol as the other things in the list. which makes sense, instant messaging is not social media.
IRC
But IRC is also centralized. You don’t peer/chat between servers?
XMPP then
I love when I try to switch apps like this and instead of content I get explanations of some Fediverse bs on 10 screens and have to pick instances I know nothing about, wondering if I will have a bad experience with what I picked, so I just abandon ship
And when I manage to finish the process I get either something that’s not working or a majorly inferior experience. Lemmy is the only thing I managed to stick with. Before good clients became available for it, it also wasn’t looking good
Pixelfed and Loops aren’t ready for migration. Account creation is still disabled and requires several messages to work around the beta splash page.
Pixelfed worked for me creating a new account.
Loops hasn’t worked
But ymmv
Loops worked for me but I had to register. Only took like 10 minutes to get the email about 2 months ago.
as far as I’m aware there’s still no android app
They give you the APK file when you’re invited. That’s what I’m using
Okay, but I’ve got a login from before they did an android version and can’t get on
Android version should be downloadable here after you login. If it isn’t, let them know at [email protected].
Loops, huh? I’ll check that out.
Oh wait.
“We’re not accepting new users at this time.”
It seems like they open up registrations in waves while it’s still in development. Signups were open just a couple weeks ago, so I imagine they’ll probably turn them back on again soon.
