You have opened my eyes. I just shaved off my eyebrows and plucked out my eyelashes.

I mean, the fact that most animals don’t understand long distance running is what made humans apex predators. So joke’s on you, animals!
Self-care always makes me feel better. I prepare something nice to drink–tea, wine, beer, depending on my mood—and a tasty snack, then put on one of my favourite audiobooks or TV shows and treat myself to a hot bath or foot bath with a relaxing bath essence.
I’m pretty sure my washing machine is the thing that saves me most time. Washing by hand is fucking hard work and very time consuming. I would neither have the time nor the physical endurance to keep all my clothes and household items in a state acceptable to society.
How about “raise VAT and kill all the poor”?
It’s better, but very far away from good. My comment and the other one mentioning the same thing are already the ones with the most downvotes in this thread. So thanks to the downvoters for proving my point, I guess.
Anything slightly “feminist”. You know, like pointing out that women do the majority of unpaid care work. Or saying it’s not nice to objectify women. Or sometimes mentioning the word women will do it.
My guess would be motion sickness.
Think about it like this: There is an almost endless amount of stuff around us at any given moment that we could be aware of. If we factor in the things that are not actually there but we can still think about, then there are infinitely many things we could be paying attention to at any moment.
But we only have a finite amount of energy to do it. The more energy we use to think about one thing the less energy remains to think about everything else.
I wouldn’t say that we are ignoring things when we concentrate. Because to me when you ignore something you are actually aware of it but choose to ignore it. When you concentrate, you just don’t have enough energy left to be aware of other things.
I used to have this problem, too. Both when trying to fall asleep in the evening and after waking up in the middle of the night for any reason.
What really helps me is putting on an audiobook or podcast that I like but already know (this part is important because otherwise I will just listen to it for the rest of the night because I want to know what happens) and setting the volume very low. I set the sleep timer to 15 minutes and most of the time I’m asleep way before it turns off.
I had to experiment a bit to find audiobooks that hit the sweet spot of being engaging enough to keep my mind from wandering but not so much that I can’t drift of to sleep but once I found a few, it’s been a real game changer.
There was a trial against members of the NSU, a German extremist-right terrorist organisation, a few years ago and the lawyers representing them were named Sturm (storm), Heer (army) and Stahl (steel). In combination they sound like something a Nazi came up with to make them sound powerful and strong.
I can’t believe that no one has mentioned the famous shower orange yet. On Reddit there is a whole subreddit dedicated to it.
A cold orange in the shower is perfect – it’s refreshing, it smells great and you don’t have to deal with the usual mess of eating an orange.
I knew being faceblind must have some benefit. I often only realise I know an actor when I see their name in the credits. Then again it can take me half a movie to realise there are two men with dark hair, a beard and glasses, so I wouldn’t entirety recommend it.
Or they’re just not a morning person. If I have to get up early, it doesn’t matter how long I have slept, even after 10 hours, I have to be up at almost an hour before I don’t feel like I would rather go back to sleep again.
I stand on the wheels of cars when scraping the windshield or removing snow so I can reach the middle of the windshield. Doesn’t work with every car though.
Regular watch. I already often find it stressfull to be constantly connected and available with just a phone, I don’t want to be even more available.
Shortly after the terrorist attacks in Paris in 2015, a football match was cancelled here in Germany because of a terror warning. There was a press conference with our Federal Minister of the Interior at the time, Thomas de Maizière. When asked for more information, he did not want to reveal that there was another warning for a train station. So he thought the best thing he could say to dodge the question was:
“Parts of the answer might unsettle the population.”
Calmed everyone down immediately.
All time favourite is hard, but here is one I often quote to myself when I get too involved in online discussions:
“You could not fence with an antagonist who met rapier thrust with blow of battle axe.”
(Lucy Maud Montgomery)
Ah damn, that sucks. I wonder what’s the reason for that.
What happens to people who rent out an apartment in the house they are living in? This is not uncommon, where I live. Grandma lives in a small separate apartment in the house, she dies, the apartment is rented out. Sometimes a child moves in later or the parents move in and a child takes over the house.
If these people risk losing a part of the house by letting someone else rent it, my guess is that they would just stop renting it in order to be able to leave the whole house to their children. Which would leave even less homes on the renting market and a bigger share to big corporations.
