  • I think significant media outlet uptake is more of a Mastodon metric, Reddit has a few high profile media outlet accounts - Tampa Bay Times I remember seeing quite a bit, they did a lot of good journalism about Scientology because Clearwater, but I think a lot of news companies slept on Reddit while it was worth using.

I think we have hit an interesting level for notability though. I use Bazzite Linux, and last month they sent a broken update for their version with legacy Nvidia drivers. I was one of the first people on the internet reporting having problems in a post here on Lemmy. As I stated to search my problem, I found that someone on the Bazzite forums linked to my Lemmy post because they had the same problem. They never commented in my thread and they may not even have an account. When’s the last time you saw a Tildes link in the wild?

  • many Americans are physically beating their children

I think it really depends on what you define as beating. Spanking was incredibly common in the South 20-30 years ago and 10 I would have said it’s still fairly common (and by south, my experience was in central Florida, parts of which actually are deep south). I’m glad it’s become less common because it actually is physically beating a child and shouldn’t be acceptable. But I’d say it still is.

As a trans man, I’ve found that one of the more horrifying nominally gendered childhood things that I share with way too many cis men is the trauma of the line if you don’t stop crying I’ll give you something to cry about. It’s fucked up.

  • By the standards of US and Canadian politics, yeah we’re to the left of center. But “center” has been dragged to the right so far that it’s prompting this whole argument. The Overton window had shifted so far that liberalism - which, in a current context, supports relatively unregulated capitalism and trickle down economics - there’s a whole swath of political ideologies that’s basically nonexistent within our modern day electoral politics. I’m somewhere in the anarchist range and choose to engage with electoral politics - if they chose to participate within the context of a FPTP voting system with two options, we’d find ourselves voting for the same candidate despite our likely highly differing political beliefs. In many countries that left wing is less smashed, the range of political discourse is much wider.

Shit just works is to the left side of, but comfortably within, the current Canadian Overton window. In a global sense, the instance is kinda to the right, in the same way that Bernie Sanders is moderate by western European standards.
