Yeah, but it amounts to asking “why is slavery bad?” You can understand why people, mostly as it is rising across the world, aren’t exactly happy that it’s even a question.

I said it’s a stupid question, not that you’re stupid BTW. But a quick Wikipedia read is enough to see that it’s not good news that many countries are kinda heading that way.

Using authoritarianism to silence the question is not the win you seem to think it is. This shit is gross

Authoritarianism is by the leader of a state or a territory, not by some random dude on Lemmy. Seriously go read the Wikipedia page at least.

            It starts with us.

I came here to get away from censorship, not join it. We need places for open discussion but I’m starting to see that this isn’t it either.

This was an opportunity to actually have a discussion about the topic and reinforce virtues of freedom, but it is doing the opposite and illustrating the descent to authoritarianism.

Fine, start your own place for all the questions you want.
Which you can do here. Unlike in an authoritarian system.

We used to say the same thing about the internet as a whole, and then the big tech companies crowded out all the smaller options, started controlling narratives and we ended up where we are at now.

I don’t want to see the same thing happen with Lemmy instances. We are on the ground floor.

I get that, but this isn’t yours to control. So if you want to change the rules (which that instance shows in the sidebar and which the mod showed how op broke two different rules in one of the many replica offended posts this sealion made after getting a comment deleted), make your own instance and don’t force it on everyone else.

Yep, that’s part of my point.

I’ve already blocked the community over this. Know any alternatives?

Removing CSAM is censorship. Removing hatespeech is censorship. What you call censorship is just moderation, and it’s necessary.

Libertarian free speech is a pipe dream, and trying to implement it always ends up giving a platform to bad actors like Nazis and child predators. Nobody here wants to recreate 4chan and 8chan except people who have an agenda.

OP appeared to break the rules and then followed up in that same community with a snarky jab at the moderators, rather than having a discussion with the mods like an adult.

Here. Witness the definitely earnest questions from OP that the mean ol’ moderators removed. /s

They’re intentionally hiding that bit, because they don’t want you to have a full picture of what they did and why they’re now spamming as many communities as possible to get sympathy.

I agree he wasn’t acting in good faith, but I’m more concerned with any would-be censorship than a silly troll. The moderator actually reached out to me and explained the scenario, and pointed out that they actually left one of their duplicate posts up.

I’m pretty happy with how the particular situation has gone down, but I do still stand by my initial comments and my principles on censorship.

Mods handled it appropriately and sealion is an idiot, misrepresenting the scenario. but that was a given.
