Is Reddit purposely surfacing more controversial posts to increase engagement, and if so when did it start happening?

I used to like Reddit more than other internet platforms because Reddit didn't seem to follow the same strategy of increasing engagement by...

That is when Reddit starts selling Reddit Premium to not sell all your data, bc fuck all you all apparently, according to spez.
