I think needing a VPN to access the internal network is a good practice. And if you’re going to be used a VPN anyway, I don’t see why you wouldn’t use a “fake” TLD like .lan for internal stuff, after all it’s just simple DNS rules.

bluesky depends on one single entity. they promised a lot about their protocol, but they have yet to show that other instances other than the official one can operate in a fully independent manner.
That’s absolutely true. The problem is that, to make use of VPN services, it’s required to have an account or other identifier.
But that’s no true for search engines. If I wanted to, I could make completely anonymous searches using SearXNG or DDG from different IPs and they would not have any way to correlate the search queries.
That’s not true with Kagi and it’s a completely unnecessary privacy risk you’re taking when using it.
copypasting the other comment I made in this thread:
and am I supposed to believe such a bold claim? the only reason they give is “trust me, bro. I pinky promise I’m not logging anything”.
You have one account, every search query you make is associated with that account. And even if they aren’t selling that ultra sensitive data, I’m sure they are keeping logs to prevent abuse and fix bugs which could be used when a third party gains access to their servers (malicious actors, law enforcement, etc).
And that’s assuming that Kagi is not mining and or selling any data themselves, which is a bold assumption given how little we know about their proprietary product. If at least they published the source code, but no. I’m supposed to trust a proprietary black box which could potentially be linking every search query back to me.

most are. just do a side by side comparison. for most queries it’s literally the same results.
I think it was because they dropped Yandex results.
same. specially considering how privacy invasive kagi is.
It is as useless. After all, it’s just Bing. But if the results are good enough for you, then why bother finding something else.
Interesting. I like the UI. I doubt the aesthetic people on Tumblr would like it but that’s not the point.
it’s always welcome to have more options in the fediverse.
How is federation working, BTW? I see you’ve commented from wafrn, are you able to follow Lemmy communities from there?
or you can just take a template, replace the placeholder text and images with your own and you’re done.
most websites don’t come up with their own design, even less scammers. it would be a waste of time
Meta could take over the fediverse pretty easily once they’ve been here for a while.
Nothing, they’re one cog in a pool of federated instances.
Yes, Threads will be technically just an instance of a federated network with thousands of instances. But Threads is so fucking big in comparison that most posts will come from there. And at that point, they can impose their algorithms and recommendations on us.
the malware has to be very advanced and specifically target your hypervisor version to escape a VM.
in the context of cracked software, it is highly improbable that you’ll find malware with this capabilities.
Both are based on the absurd concept of intellectual property. They are the same cancerous thing that is crippling technological and cultural advancement.
Edit: Seeing your comment history in the piracy community, I don’t understand why you bother commenting. It’s pretty clear that you’re a corpo buttlicker. I’m sure there are communities where youd be better received.
We have lost much having to wait for meds patents or other useful technologies.
And even in the entertainment industry we have probably lost so many masterpieces that could have been inspired by copyrighted material. Of course, that we will never know.
I hope urban community gardens were a thing in my country. It would provide fresh and cheap vegetables and I wouldn’t mind working at it a few hours per month.
When the people shall have nothing more to eat, they will eat the rich.
Firstly: commerzialization will come eventually anyways
And it’s going to make the fediverse way worse.
Secondly: what has all of that to do with democracy? I would hope that the Fediverse thrives to become a democratic place.
I’m not sure I understand your idea of democracy. Isn’t the fediverse “democratic” already? Everyone is free to federate and defederate with anyone.
Also, the Fediverse is currently still rather small. If it should benefit humanity as a whole, you will not be able to avoid corporations completely.
Corporations are not humans. They use us and see us as nothing more than numbers. They don’t give a shit about people or humanity as a whole.
I’ll make sure to block every corp I’m aware of. You’re still free to do otherwise, of course. Isn’t that democracy for you?
Wow, that’s great. Only the thing that our society is based on for last decades with a tradition of hundreds of years. Great, down the toilet with it! Hope you got some idea with what to replace it …
You have idealised liberalism. It only has brought crisis after crisis, provoked unnecessary wars, given birth to monstrous cynical corporations, etc.
I’m not saying democracy is broken, just liberalism and capitalism.
I don’t want to save the liberal democracy, thanks.
Actually, I’d say the fediverse nature is pretty much contrary to liberal values, at least in the state it exists right now with most instances being maintained by volunteers and donations, not corporations (let’s obviate Threads for the moment because there’s no full federation)
I’d say that Threads or the former Twitter allign far better with the values of liberalism, being for-profit private companies.
come on, setting up your own DNS is not difficult at all. For my home network, it’s running in a Raspberry Pi, but before that I ran it locally on my desktop. There’s no way I’d spend 15$ a year to resolve internal addresses.
Sure, you have to be careful with the TLD you choose, but I believe that if the ICANN were to create the .lan TLD, it would be all over the internet first.
