  • Imagine Bob is hosting a community about cat pictures, and I want to send him a picture of my cat to forward to other followers of that community.

    How do I:

    • Locate bob given a name or some other ID
    • Verify that it is indeed Bob (and not someone pretending to be Bob)
    • Prove to Bob that I am indeed who I say I am
    • Send that cat picture without anyone in the middle snooping on it

All of this in a political environment that bans the sharing of cat pictures.

  • My question is… What does this do that ActivityPub and ATProto doesn’t do? That’s the angle you should approach this from (and be ready to defend… People on Lemmy seem adamant that ActivityPub is perfect and unbeatable…). We’re technical people here, sell it as a technical solution to a problem rather than using buzzwords or comparing it to Bitcoin.

You’ve mentioned serverless many times, but ultimately I need to send content somewhere and ask someone to send me content. I can’t just throw my posts into the wind and expect someone else to get them. So how do I make a post if not by sending it to a trusted person?

  • Someone made an offhand comment that I would be an otter if only I were more laid back.

And honestly, that made me kinda wish I could be more relaxed and chill. Everything just seems to important and stressful and difficult and intense to me… I wish I could just turn that all off and just let things happen to me as they come rather than fearing and planning for the future.

  • This is actually something I’ve been thinking about a lot as of late…

    I broadly have three “identities”:

    • My “IRL” identity, for work and family life and stuff.
    • My “online” identity where I pretend to be a wolf-thing.
    • My “spicy online” identity which… Well, it’d be rude to share. :P

I’ve been wondering how isolated to keep them… But as part of my recent plan to stop worrying about everything so much, I’m trying to not get too stressed about ways people could figure out how to “link them together”. I highly doubt that anyone is going to take the time to run my reputation through the mud. And even if they tried, I like to think we live in modern times where the fact that I look at werewolf boobs isn’t going to be that morally objectionable.

Or at least, I hope so.

  • For me, depression makes it hard to do or at least enjoy things, making most things require a lot of effort. But laying on my bed browsing my phone? Yeah, that’s easy and cheap to do mentally and physically. Not to mention the fact that anxiety brain is always looking for threats it needs to be aware of, and social media has a way of highlighting threatening things.

I do my best to avoid algorithmic social media… I can’t imagine how much stronger those pulls would be with a system that is specifically optimized to prey upon them…

Disclaimer: This is my own experience, and may not be applicable to everyone. Speak to your doctor to see if social media is right for you.

  • “Deprogramming” makes sense in the sense for the far right because there is a lot of misinformation and fake news and outrage bait and all that kind of stuff. Getting people out of those trappings is good because it allows them to see how things really are, rather than what people want them to think.

That isn’t really a problem with the left. I mean, I’m sure you could find some extreme subreddit somewhere where people want to bring out the guillotine to kill all capitalists or cut everyone’s genitals off in the name of gender equality… But ultimately they’re much rarer than the equivalent alt right spaces.

Extreme conservatives are very common and an existential threat to many groups. Extreme liberals are a mild curiosity that need to go out and touch grass.

That should hopefully explain the votes, saying that you need to deprogram “extreme liberals” brings up questions about what you actually mean by “extreme liberal” given that it really isn’t that big an issue in society.

… Or maybe all this is just my biases.
