I’ve lived in California for most of my life, and we go on frequent drives between LA and SF, usually a few times a year.

In the 80’s and 90’s bugs would cover the front of our vehicles and the windshield would be difficult to see through even with wipers and washer fluid. We’d actually have to stop to manually scrape them off.

In the 00’s and 10’s we noticed that we’d get basically zero bugs on a long drive, and that sparked many conversations about California environmental law.

I just got back from a drive up the coast and I can happily say that we’re back to insane numbers of bug strikes on the highway. Just north of Ventura I drove through a cloud of large bugs that hit like rocks and instantly covered almost my entire windshield. This situation has been noticably turning around since COVID, which I think is a good thing

I was influenced greatly by Robert Axelrod’s short essay about the Prisoner’s Dilemma titled “The Prisoner’s Dilemma Computer Tournaments and the Evolution of Cooperation” (link PDF warning)

tl;dr The essay explores an iterative game of Prisoner’s Dilemma, and demonstrates how cooperation can emerge from a group of self interested participants. It has implications for the statistical emergence of morality, and even remarks on politics.

Today is the day that my local area shut down for COVID in 2020. I live near the ocean, the beach was closed, the golf courses were closed, the stores had cops out front stopping looting. It was wild.

Hard disagree. Try making a sauce which requires high heat, then very low heat. Turning the electric burner down doesn’t immediately reduce heat, it cools off relatively slowly. I guess you could switch to another burner that was preheated to a low temp, assuming you have a free burner while cooking.

I’ve worked for years in several professional kitchens and cook 3 meals a day, 7 days a week from scratch at home. I know how to use the tools in a kitchen, and non-induction electric burners are absolute garbage.

I absolutely agree. I’m happy to switch to a new technology as long as it performs at least as well as my current implementation.

I have a few cast iron and carbon steel pans, but most of my cooking vessels are thick copper (not copper inserts, full 3mm or more copper). Copper pans are superior to any other material (unless you prioritize cost) and are sadly incompatible with induction.

Don’t even talk to me about electric element (non induction) stoves, they’re garbage for heat control.

Papaya salad is my absolute favorite Thai dish.

I’m pretty sure I didn’t mess with systemd, though that would probably be the right way to handle it.

I was able to update a runtime config so if any storage wasn’t available it just halted the service. Then I created a short script I’d invoke manually which decrypted the luks drives and brought the dependent services up. I also added monitoring to alert me when the drives weren’t available for whatever reason.

I use separate disks for data storage and my OS. That way a headless system can boot and all the services like SSH can become available, and I can decrypt the data drives remotely.

When there’s an unexpected reboot I can still get into my system and decrypt remotely which is nice. I can also move the data storage disks to another system without too much hassle.

I did have to make sure some services were fault tolerant if an encrypted volume was unavailable when the OS booted. An example of this might be torrenting software, I needed to make sure the temporary storage was on an encrypted volume. The software had a sane fault mode when the final storage location was unavailable, but freaked out for some reason when the temp storage was missing.

Once set up the whole thing is pretty easy to manage.

I’m under the impression that wet signature means the original signed contract, not a copy or facsimile. Basically this person is saying “Prove that you and I have a contract by producing the actual piece of paper that I signed.”

One of the reasons lots of legal documents were originally signed in blue ink was because it would be easy to tell if you were looking at a black and white copy. Obviously this is less relevant recently.
