What are some ways to encourage posts that are more engaging?

as a volunteer mod that’s guilty of linkposting I’d honestly say there’s 2 things that would probably encourage fellow linkers to do more which is:

1. Thanking posters who are currently and consistently posting links with additional content/info.
2. Donations
   • honestly financial support goes a long way for higher quality content, like just look at YouTubers or content creators who have Patreon, Kofi, Liberapay in contrast to those who only have sponsors or aren’t paid at all

3. What’s your experience with Operating Systems? (Windows, Linux, Mac) <- (asking here as you stated wanted something “easy to use”).
4. From your previous comment above what do you mean by “scrolling and playing”? I’m assuming web browsing and gaming? If this is correct what kinds of games do you typically play?

As you can see, some of these questions I typically ask can get a bit personal hence why I ask that I have private conversations unless the person in question consents and acknowledges that they’re ok with sharing potentially private information (like even writing this out makes me sketched out as mishandling any type of private information can be a serious legal risk)

• I’d usually steer towards pc building as buying a laptop would usually be the worst of all options (which brings me great pain for my customers)
  • and building an actual server can be costly unless you’re buying easily accessible second -hand/used components

one thing I forgot to mention is that it also heavily depends on an individual’s use cases, restrictions, and preferences

that is definitely true however the added benefit is typically a longer warranty range as buying a laptop would typically mean that all components would be sold under a single flat warranty cycle/deadline

plus even if your computer is borked, you can still take it into a microcenter, memoryexpress, brick-and-mortor retailer to have their technicians figure it out the problem for a cost

I often have these time vs cost tradeoff discussions with my customers after they’ve been informed on the basics

tbh I wouldn’t be surprised if this was the case cause after reddit’s self-made implosion with the API access debacle, the majority of us migrated to (fediverse instances such as) mastodon and here

with a $1000 budget they might want to consider building a computer as desktops usually provide better performance/per cost rather than buying a $1000 laptop

• desktop pcs can also be small if a small form-factor like ITX or mini-ITX is chosen (although mini-ITX can be pricey)

building is incredibly easy as there’s a plethora of tutorial vids online and you’re less likely to get screwed over by an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) or retailer
