  • In 2013, the crater’s flame intensity and temperatures were at its recorded peak. At the same time, renowned Canadian explorer, George Kourounis, became the first – and only – person to enter the crater wearing a full heat-reflective Kevlar/Nomex suit and a firefighter’s Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) to provide oxygen. He descended to the 752 °F (400 °C) crater floor and retrieved soil samples. Scientists later found extremophile bacteria living in the scorched earth samples Kourounis provided.

Wtf that’s the craziest part of this story!

  • I remember 2 years ago trying out Lemmy and getting a few laughs about beans and trying not to poop. I thought “this is ok, but I don’t think this will ever replace Reddit in my day to day.”

But I stuck with it and have come to love and appreciate Lemmy. The number of users has continued to grow and I feel like there’s enough content here now that I never feel bored. Plus I feel like even small posts and comments get attention and we’re not just screaming into the void.

So happy cake day to all who did the same thing!

  • I’ve found that meal delivery kits are perfect for this situation, though they typically require a commitment of cooking at least 3 days a week. I like how they let you pick recipes ahead of time and then take care of the ingredients. I suck at planning, so having them take care of the planning so I can focus on the cooking has been awesome for me.
