Yeah you’re correct. The person you’re replying to is treating dictionary attacks as separate from brute forcing. Dictionary attacks are great on short passwords using likely words, but as soon as you use 2 or 3 or 4 words it becomes computationally unfeasible. I would say a completely random string of the same or much less length is more secure because a dictionary attack won’t work at all, but 3-4 word passphrases are excellent for passwords that you have to manually enter ever.

I use the Audiobookshelf app from AdvPlyr on the play store. I’ve been meaning to try Lissen since it’s on F-Droid, but I tried this to make sure my partner didn’t have any issues.

If I’m using it on my PC I just connect to the web UI.

I connect on all my devices with tailscale. My partner uses the same but has apparently been having issues with her phone not being able to access the tailnet when not on the same LAN. It’s not so bad though, the Audiobookshelf app lets her download her books. This works better anyway, since she travels for work and often has no service anyway.

I use abs and it’s great. My partner listens to audiobooks, I read ebooks. You just have them side by side in the library, and in the audiobookshelf android app you can choose between stream or read. You also don’t need to store them side by side, the metadata can put them together clientside anyway. I guess this would be the way to go if you thought you might try a diff ebook hosting service later.

If all you do with your ebooks is read them, I daresay you’ll have no issues because I haven’t. Supports volume controls for page turn and that’s all that I want.

Second Baikal, I’m using docker on nixos through compose2nix and it’s great for syncing both my calendar and my tasks.org todo lists. Crazy easy to setup as well.

Do you mean being dependent on people having “done it in nix before” so you can copy it? Definitely true to some extent. The language takes a bit of getting used to. Haven’t watched the video so idk context, but if using docker on nix there’s a great tool called compose2nix that converts compose files for docker or podman into declarative nix files. That took a lot of the challenge away for me personally.

I would say with all of these recommendations, you can probably look to find an AM4 motherboard and user ddr4 instead of ddr5 ram secondhand. If you play heavily modded Minecraft, ddr4 ram will be much more affordable to opt for 64 GB if you want to allocate 20-30gb and keep a lot free still. AM4 motherboards cover a large range of CPUs up to ryzen 5xxx I think. there’s a lot of room for upgrades if you can only find one of the older CPUs. I jumped from a 2700x to a 3900x recently and it’s been great

Why not? People are generally always online these days and there is a lot of music out there, plenty to fill a phone many times over. Granted you might only have a few hours worth of tracks at any time but there is obviously at least one person (OP) who doesn’t.

Because retailers are middle-men by definition. Large online resellers just have much less overhead, so the cut they take for being a middleman is much smaller. They often also have the bargaining power to reduce their cost price with the supplier. You should look for things that are produced in large quantities locally, and find ways to purchase direct from supplier, if you want to save money buying locally rather than spending more to support local business. Buying from independent local retailers is for indirect social and economic benefit. We should all endeavour to do it as much as we can but it’s also very hard to justify when cost differences are large.

Honest question, not trying to be adversarial. Do you have any sources behind not trusting networking equipment (I’ve seen the claim from others apply to electronics more broadly) from AliExpress? The protagonist was wrongly imprisoned and I thought the film thoroughly demonstrated the worst of humanity in some of the incarcerated, juxtaposed against the corruption of prison staff and the protagonist’s own struggle for a pretty powerful message.

The semantics is that downloading is copying something from one computer system to another. Nothing about intent or permanence or whether it’s a temp/cache file or not. If you did not download the file, you cannot have seen it.

Whether you meant to do something or not does not change the action. The colloquial use of the word downloading to mean something different from streaming or browsing does not change the fundamental action.

In the case of WhatsApp, which is specifically in question here, it doesn’t “cache” images in a temporary folder. It saves the images to your devices media folders in their own library. So even by your definition, they’re being downloaded. Now, this is a setting which is on by default so maybe an individual doesn’t realise. It doesn’t mean they’re not downloading the content.

If you use VLC, Stremio can’t track your progress in a video which is quite frustrating. It is a better media player though, I especially like the picture in picture mode. I mostly use Stremio on my crappy off brand smart tv and can’t get the vlc player to work though.

Completely agree with your last two sentences, mostly. I can’t personally call it the best movie of its kind just because I don’t watch a lot of movies in the same vein. But you’re right that it’s hard to compare across genres, and the movie was definitely far better than I expected. I think the last couple of years have generally had some great releases.

I think it deserved to do better at the box office but I disagree calling it that good, primarily by counterexample (which I’ll get to). It had an entertaining cast, an entertaining plot and some good twists but it wasn’t unpredictable and the audience it was best for was the audience who recognised the constant homages to the experience of playing DnD - my primary example is the scene of the main character breaking out of prison completely unnecessarily.

The movie was made by Hasbro to sell dungeons and dragons (which, to be fair, you do mention) and I think as a fan of the ttrpg it did a great job of capturing that experience as a movie. I can’t call it the film of the year though, let alone the decade.

What makes you say it’s better than, for example, Blade Runner 2049 or Avengers Endgame, both being movies similarly sprouting from established brands? I would argue Dune is significantly better (talking about movies with a brand) also.

Outside the established brand space, you see movies like JoJo Rabbit, Marriage Story and Power of the Dog. All of my examples have been off arbitrary top 10/top 50 lists of the last 5 or last 10 years and I’m honestly curious about why you think the DnD movie beats all of them?
