  • I remember having a defective hdd in my PC. I brought the pc to the shop, where I bought it from to get it replaced under warranty. They told me they couldn’t restore my data (I had backups) and asked if I wanted them to install windows on it. When they asked for my key I was like “FC…” and they responded “ok, we know that one, no need to spell it out” and proceeded with the installation

  • The first one kinda works, but I think it’d be more clear, when used without “selbst”/self, as this would be read to reference the invention instead of the inventor.

On the other hand, that then feels like “yeah, it didn’t work. The invention misfired and is crap”. Maybe “Erfindungserschafferzerstörer”? (Invention’s creator destructor) but that sounds off, too.

There’s not really a word that I can come up with that really conveys this meaning. There’s a german saying “wer Andern eine Grube gräbt, fällt selbst hinein” (he, who digs a hole for others, will fall into it by itself). Then there’s the humorous “Rohrkrepierer” (along the lines of “died in the barrel”) which basically means something like “dead on arrival” / that went wrong and didn’t work. So it’d be probably something that references one of those, which would make it work culturally?

  • There was another guy from Eastern Europe who got a lot of Covid shots. While the lockdown you sometimes needed a vaccination certificate to do some things and there were several anti-vax people who did want such certificates without getting vaccinated. So they either had to find someone willing to take their shot (and a doctor that didn’t do real identity checks) or they had to get a counterfeit certificate. There were some cases, where people got dozens of shots and sold their certificates.

It’s not the most detailed thing, but I just use a free account on cron-job.org to send a head request every two minutes to a few services that are reachable from the internet (either just their homepage or some ping endpoint in the API) and then used the status page functionality to have a simple second status page on a third party server.

You can do a bit more on their paid tier, but so far I didn’t need that.

On the other hand, you could try if a free tier/cheap small vps on one of the many cloud providers is sufficient for an uptime Kuma installation. Just don’t use the same cloud provider as all other of your services run in.

  • (I’m not the person you replied to)

I’m unsure, I use both. In theory it should wear out less, since you’re loading slower and with less current. In practice it generates heat and this gets generated in the coils that are right near or on the battery, which then again causes wear… I’m not sure which effect is stronger, or whether it’s a trade-off and doesn’t do much of a difference.

  • I use Voice audiobook player, that can do that, too. But when I switch devices, … it’s easier to pick up where I left, if it’s at least separated by chapters (or as some MP3 CDs do every 3-5 minutes a new track).

Also I do sometimes buy mp3 audiobooks for a blind friend who prefers to listen to them on a CD player (buttons can be felt and its easier to use than a touch screen). But a single, several hours long mp3 is bad in this scenario. And as i didnt find a tool to split them easily, Audible exclusives were out of the question…
