Oh yeah… the poet’s house was dope as fuck.
I would love a series about an “Interplanetary University” that had its campus setup across several dozen planets using Farcasters. That would be an interesting setting in the Hyperion universe.

It was a bit of “handwave-ium” and sentient AI. Here’s the Wiki for the series if you want to compare your concept…
Here’s an article about the Farcasters themselves and here’s the article about the World Web that AI and humanity ran with them.

I love the Farcaster network of the World Web from Dan Simmons’ Hyperion Cantos (for anyone who hasnt read the books, they’re essentially frameless stargates that are always on). Such a cool concept of being able to build a series of them linking the main commercial streets of the biggest cities on different planets together; thus making one gigantic and near endless market across hundreds of worlds… and anyone can just walk from one planet to another across hundreds or thousands of light years.
What I really like about that book series though is that the Farcasters are not the only means of FTL… and that there are sound reasons to use another method over them OR even to oppose your planet getting connected to the Farcaster network. Just seriously good world building.

Computer, show me the warp core!

(are they still clergy if they aren’t Catholic?)
Yep, it’s a catch-all term. You can also refer to an Imam or Rabbi as a member of that religion’s clergy.

Ugh… just bought some new Bluetooth headphones and my god i wish they’d let these little chargers just die already.

Leonard Nimoy was a pretty tough celebrity death for me. It was like losing a super cool uncle, a person who’d been in my life for my whole life, but hadn’t seen in a long while, was dead.

Season 1 was basically Seth MacFarlane’s TNG fan scripts… it’s a Star Trek series through and through.

I haven’t really seen it outside of the like normal levels of hate. Which subLemmys or whatever are you seeing it on?

I’m almost 40, this place reminds me of the early internet in a good way. Like, people connecting and sharing ideas… what even Reddit used to feel like. Sure, sometimes there are arguments but, due to the lack of an “outage” algorithm to juice engagement, you usually only hear about it unless it’s something you directly follow. With the lack of profit motive on the side of the platform and hosting end of things, it appears that trolls and clout chasers have a genuine hard time monopolizing everyone’s attention.

I don’t get the hate this place gets. It’s been really interesting watching Lemmy’s growing pains over the last two-ish years and all the changes it has undergone. The whole concept of the Fediverse is fascinating to me and has been a genuine delight to explore.

I was 21 years old.
Decided the best way to begin drinking was to do shots of Southern Comfort with my roommate. I got like blackout drunk, woke up hours later needing to vomit… I ran to the bathroom where I found my roommate passed out in the bathtub in the fetal position in his own sick. I turned to the toilet as the SoCo and bile made its way to the top of my throat, it was go time, now or never… to my horror both the seat and the lid were down. My mouth filled as I tried to get the lid open and then… disaster struck. The puke hit the diagonal plain of the half raised lid and sprayed all over the walls and toilet tank. I then slipped and face planted into the tank giving myself a black eye.
I didn’t drink for two years after that night.

If the USA were to have a general strike, it’s more than likely that the UAW would be the ones calling for it. They’re a very large union of which most Americans are aware and likely have a very high approval amongst average people.

I’d urge you to organize your workplace and form a union. You can contact organizers at the AFL-CIO (a kind of union of unions in the US) and find which union is right for your workplace. If you don’t work but are still able to do physical or intellectual labor, start getting as involved in your local community as possible… volunteer at food banks, after school programs, nursing homes, etc. The more people you can reach out to and help or with whom you can organize the better. If you cannot do those things due to personal issues (disability, etc), do what you can in encouraging others to take these steps. You have a voice here on the internet (at the very least), educate yourself as best as you can on how folks can help one another and encourage others to take these steps.
A massive action like a general strike isn’t just organized over night by total strangers… it takes communities with common cause and familiarity with one another. Realistically, if anyone is calling a general strike, odds are it’ll be like the United Auto Workers kicking shit off. Maybe the railroad folks or the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, but more than likely the UAW will lead the charge.
You’re on the right track asking “how to” and that’s great! Organizing is a rough road, but it’s vital and worth it… the more people doing it the better in any capacity. United we bargain, divided we beg.

Give Fedilab a try. I’ve been using it for about a year now; it’s been pretty smooth and straight forward.

You can follow Lemmy threads and users on Mastodon right now, but it’s super clunky just from the fact both platforms are so different from each other. Here’s this thread, as seen from my Mastodon account on the Tusky app.

I’ve never used the official app for PixelFed, I’m just on Fedilab for both it and Mastodon… is the PixelFed app worth a look?
Funny thing is that, while a similar principle, they’re safer and more ethical than the Star Trek “suicide booth” transporters.
