Hi I’m Tim.
I’m AuDHD - officially diagnosed ADHD and self-diagnosed (for now) with ASD. I also suffer from a great deal of Imposter Syndrome.

Mastodon is part of the fediverse though, and is open and a nonprofit. Bluesky is neither of those things, and that is why it’s different.
And giving the resources from a free and open network to a for-profit corporation is both dumb and rude IMHO.
I don’t think the argument is even about privacy, but giving away someone else’s (or in this case potentially a whole network of people’s content), and admins resources in order to drive some corporate profits they aren’t even getting a share of. If someone needs to chat with someone on Bluesky that bad then they should just make an account, not undermine a whole network so they can be lazy.
What has people upset is that the “service” is opt-out instead of opt-in, and one someone else is making for server admins without warning. If this person wanted to run a server and give their own content to the corporate overlords that is their choice, but making something to give others content away without their consent doesn’t sit well with a lot of people.
Yes, but consuming data and using someone else’s data for profit are 2 different things. Don’t believe me, start reposting a large news websites data verbatim with AdSense on it and see how quickly the cease and desist comes.
Open yes, but Bluesky is not open, they are after free content to make the corporate investors a return at all costs. If a non-profit wants to use my server to add content to their platform, I have no issue with that. But a for-profit can pay me for content if they want it, I don’t work for them or use their platform.
The same argument could be used for copyright itself, and why we have non-commercial licenses for things. Just because you are giving something away as free (as in beer), doesn’t mean that some for-profit should be able to just use it to drive up their user base and make the corp more money. I think content creators, or at the very least in the fediverse - server owners, should be able to limit what corporations can suck up to further corporate profits at the expense of the fediverse.
If you want to run a server and donate your resources to make a for-profit corp money, that is your right, but to tell everyone that they should have no control of their content is unacceptable to me.
Going out on a limb, but the for profit corporation being able to suck up your posts is probably what has many upset. I personally would block such a service as I don’t see these for-profit corporations as part of the fediverse, but as leeches out to Extend, Embrace, Extinguish.
I remember some time ago someone on here had created a site that allowed you to sign up for a time slot to DJ from their site with your own playlist. People could also write in to the DJ currently on and request songs as well.
There is also Funkwhale that allows you to share your collection and listen to others that choose to share as well.
Weird, did you run any of the alpha/beta/rc builds? I did and maybe that somehow made my upgrade smoother?
Granted my instance is tiny, but have had zero noticeable issues with 0.19.1 since updating weeks ago. It had some increase in CPU on deployment due to DB and Pictrs also doing DB upgrades (or upgrade prep - depending if you stayed on 4.7 or went to 5), but has been running fine since.
Reading a post and having a bot thrashing a server indexing everything are 2 different things. If a user used the site like that they would be throttled and if repeated afterwards, banned. It is also one thing to read/interact with a site as that adds value to the site as a whole. A bot that just mass hits links cataloging everything is just a strain on the server an Admin needs to support, with no upside for the instance, as it’s a bot ingesting and no real interaction actually took place.
That’s the thing, it would need to be done in chunks and have its revisits scheduled if you want to do a complete indexing of an instance. And for a large instance that’s a lot of DB thrashing if you aren’t spacing that out, or just sampling like “top 10 posts” or something, but that kind of data is going to make a useless search engine depending on the goal of the search engine. If you wanted to just catalog the daily top posts of the fediverse that might work, but if you want to catalog everything it’s going to take a lot of resources and a long time to make sure you’re not hammering people’s servers.
Yes, not only used by trolls, but would be a tool that could be leveraged by trolls. And I think the fediverse makes it easier to establish instances for marginalized groups, but also has more admins that just don’t want trolls because nobody here is making $ off them like the corporate socials are. I think if adding search that is going to try and vacuum up everyone’s posts in the fediverse and make them easily sortable/targetable without instance admins permission, then that isn’t cool. If someone is running a general instance that covers nothing that a troll could latch onto and wants the instance catalogued and searchable then that’s fine by me. I don’t think boys should be doing that to the fediverse as a whole without admin permission though.
For that to happen on an instance organically users would need to visit all these instances/communities. To speed that up you would need a bot to do all.that “seeding” for you. That brings you full circle to the server resources on bigger instances.
This seems like an opt-in, not an opt-out activity.
I was thinking more in terms of resources (number of spider threads X posts/communities/users being indexed) that would be now dedicated to a bot, not so much network traffic that is probably tiny if not downloading images.
And once you have this index of a vulnerable group of people how do you gatekeep that from the trolls? And moderation tools only work on this platform, the problem is the trolls that take that info to everything these people interact with and make it a game to give them no peace.
Your post is of much privilege, marginalized groups care about trolls very much.
And they pump them out at a steady clip these days, which is great for people into the sport, but at that price it adds up quickly. And like Tyson fights back in the day, you might only get a few minutes of actual fighting for that price.
