  • Excluding laws in certain places meant to protect children from a life of ridicule, you can name your child whatever you want.

The issue of trademark, which is what this article highlights, only concerns applications where there is a business conflict. For example, it is normal for an actor/musician/artist to trademark their name as their “brand,” which means I can’t just form a thrash metal band called “Taylor Swift” to profit off of some confused music listeners. And even if my legal name was Taylor Swift, I could still be required to change my “stage name” to something else when promoting myself as an artist to avoid any confusion/conflict with Tay-Tay.

Last I checked, Warner Bros is not in the passport industry, so this is a dumb argument that should never have occurred. If I had to guess, it was probably just some random disgruntled government employee who felt the need to play armchair activist and “punish” a parent because they didn’t like the name they chose for their child.

  • From an end user perspective there’s not that much to think about, thankfully.

Basically, it’s like having two websites that mirror each other’s content. You can sign up for Forum A and be able to read and write posts that users on Forum B can also see. People’s names are tagged with the name of the forum they are registered at, but otherwise everything you do and see happens on your own site of choice and there’s no difference where it comes from.

If Forum A doesn’t like Forum C, but Forum B doesn’t mind, Forum A can choose to disconnect from Forum C and hide their users and posts, while Forum B can still see both. It only gets tricky when someone from Forum B makes a post that people from both Forums A and C are in, but all of the posts from C users are invisible to A users.

  • Yeah, I ended up installing that to bring back my previous swipe gestures.

I like button navigation, but I don’t like having the buttons on the screen at all times where they’ll eventually burn in, so just being able to swipe where the buttons otherwise would be was working for me.

I tried to switch to the new gesture mode they implemented, but having the entire left and right sides of my screen get turned into a back button, preventing me from swiping the edges of my device to open and close menus like I was used to, was just too inconvenient.

GoodLock brought me back to how things were and I’m happy it exists, but the only drawback is that it doesn’t seem to support long pressing the home button to bring up Google Assistant. Or rather, that Google Assistant no longer supports that mode of being called, opting for Circle to Search instead, which GoodLock can’t call up either.
