To give full credit to this movie, Final Fantasy games are just as convoluted. You try to condense the plot of the amnesia child soldiers who fight demons from the moon summoned by their teacher/mother in hopes they’ll defeat the reincarnated witch who’s destined to take over her body (FF8) in an hour and a half with Steve Buscemi, Alec Baldwin, and tell me if it’s Oscar worthy. (I have no clue whether the original Japanese cast was as star studded)

I hated that movie as a kid, but I think I hated it more because it didn’t follow any of the other convoluted stories I forced myself to understand already.

There’s a lot of comments in here addressing the social skill reduction, as if those kids in gifted programs (hello, fellow former gifted kids) didn’t still socialize with their peers in just about every other aspect.

Even the kids in ‘charter school programs’ here were just separated from a group of 400 to a group of 50 or so kids for half or so of the day and then the rest of the stuff they attended classes with the other 350 kids. Even if they were completely separated off, they still have peers (admittedly, also ‘gifted’ peers).

Ignoring that portion, and you’ve still got the fact that you MUST challenge a child while developing. If I didn’t get put in the ‘gifted’ track, I’d have goofed off even more and paid even less attention. NONE of my peers had their parents doing their homework (like some commentera have put), we just finally had homework we couldn’t do on our own on the bus ride home. If you don’t challenge a child’s mind, they can’t grow. And people who think every kid learns at the same pace, and that learning slower than the pace your brain can handle has no negative side effects, have no idea what they’re talking about and should look into child development as a focus of psychology and come back to this comment thread.

I hear you and agree with that concept.

I think that, if your goal was ultimately to further the conversation (in it’s format, I don’t see anything wrong with what you initially wrote), adding examples of what you mean by recent interactions pointing towards the user base being more skewed towards teenagers. That might have deterred anyone who was unsure of whether you were being genuine or just bashing on the next generation the way we’ve seen historically.

Your comment didn’t seem to ring with the community, that could be because they’re of the age group you’re citing as the group supportive of this shitty behavior (distracted driving), or it could be because the base of your stance didn’t root itself in examples they could identify with and so they downvoted an opinion they disagreed with.

I’d say the most likely reason people downvote is because they disagree, I wouldn’t have much knowledge on their age though so I won’t make claims on that part.
