About the ethics of murder or other crimes in alternate universes : I actually pondered this quite a bit before. Imagine a world where accessing parallel realities is accessible to everyone (wether it be time traveling or “booking” a divergent universe to do as you wish). Well it could be morally accepted that it’s an OK means of stress relief to insult, vandalize, harm, kill torture in these realities (as long as you behave in the main reality). My conclusion is that hurting people is wrong, even if you can revert the timeline or delete the universe as if you hadn’t done anything. Hurting people in the moment is wrong even if there are no consequences on the world around you, because there is still a lasting change on yourself.

3. Germany: (again) as an exchange student in middle school. I still have a seering memory that I didn’t even know what my home region name was in German (Lorraine = Löthringen)

5. UK: went three time, in middle school, high school and with family. Best time was in high school when I boarded at this Elvis double’s. We always listened to great music and he made pancakes EVERY morning ❤️
6. Denmark: exchange student in high school. It’s a beatiful country with great history. Too bad that my pen pal/exchange student and I were both timid :[
7. Catalogna, Spain: with friends. Lasting memory is that I took some pleasure swimming again there. Wasn’t my thing since PE teacher said to my face I could’nt swim… 😬

Looking back, I’m quite privileged 😅

It’s not online but at my usual bar I often get into arguments with a monarchist guy and a free-market/deregulation dude. They often tell me they’ll someday manage to make me “take the red pill”. It’s kind of annoying for them to disregard my views like that. That’s why I don’t actively try to change theirs.

The US won’t annex Greenland, that would basically make a pariah of them on the international scene. Like Russia there would be economic sanctions, trade deals would be broken, american assets abroad would be seized and this could include american military bases. So yeah, most likely the US governmint is gonna keep acting like a childish bully trying to drive a wedge between Greenland and Denmark. And maybe between every european nations…

There’s also a version of Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup on mobile. Although the UI is quite clunky with the control and shift commands imported from PC. But the gameplay is more elaborate than Shattered Pixel Dungeon, I’d say.

There is a great video about the Great Filter by Kurzgesagt/In a Nut Shell. If I remember correctly, in it they say we can guess at which stage the filter is by how evolved extraterrestrial life forms are. So it’s actually great if we find a lot of bacteria or other primitive life forms, that would mean we probably already have overcome the Geat Filter on Earth. On the other hand, if we find many alien ruins of several civilizations at or above our technological level… Well, our greatest challenge might be coming.

A few years ago I would have agreed with this statement. But lately, I’ve seen a change described in several press articles and news pieces. The younger generations in the US demand true social justice and aren’t afraid to say they’re socialists, against capitalism or consumerism. It’s a burgeoning revolution of course, since the establishment is still in control of traditional political parties. But this crack in the old broken system could bring about positive change in the long run. At least I hope so.

I’ve been using qwant for a few weeks and it gives me quite satisfying and accurate results. Before I had been using ecosia for years but the results can be lackluster sometimes. Especially when you search very specific “niche” things (like obscure Linux problems troubleshooting). But I’m still looking for a browser which let’s you pick multiple languages for results.

No I’ve never met a French person who hates Haiti for becoming independent. There might be 1 or 2 die-hard bonapartists like that somewhere, but we just see them as a lunatic minority like the other monarchists. Most people don’t even remember Haiti being part of France. But there are still a lot of nostalgics of French Algeria and other former African colonies. And boy that’s very cringe for our diplomatic relations sometimes!

I’m French so I can tell you we don’t learn about Haïti in History class. I was curious some time ago so I did a bit of research about it. It was quite inspiring to see that the young independent nation was actually prosperous in its early years. But being a small island-country is hard, even more so when you have to pay a debt of 150M francs to France ($560M today). I wouldn’t say Haïti’s misery is maintained by racism today, but by the ravages of past imperialism. And in the 1800s, racism was more a justification for colonisation rather than the discrimination/segregation we see since the 20th century.

I’m torn between Battlestar: Galactica and Dark. The first one is definitely my favourite space opera of all time. But the mind-blowingly intricate plot of Dark makes it the one of the best mysteries ever told I’d say.

This might seem a little naive but I’d say you need the right space to bring different cultures together, and a lot of good will! For instance, I’m thinking of projects like the Erasmus programme for students in Europe, or even constructed languages like Esperanto that aim to build bridges between peoples. If we approach things with the right angle, there’s always a way to build something with our differences, as resources and not obstacles.
