  • I actually want to prioritise the data protection of some sort of RAID setup, and support for torrenting and whatnot would be secondary to that. Really what I’m trying to avoid is installing and setting up my system only to find out that the OS I’ve picked is terrible for torrenting afterwards.

    I have a workable setup on consumer Windows 11 right now, so I see the next step as having a dedicated Media Server box which can give me plenty of storage, data protection (right now a drive failure would wipe out half my server), and room for future expansion. Once that’s sorted, then I’ll look into the Arr suite and more advanced torrenting stuff. I want to pick something good for that stuff now, though, so I don’t have a ton of headache down the road







  • Sure, it’s conventional explosive with radioactive markers to test the detection capabilities of their equipment. I was being polite with my earlier comment, in case I had missed something in the article, but I guess I didn’t.

    The Wikipedia page on Explosives gives some reading on the differences between the two. Suffice it to say, chemical and nuclear explosions are fundamentally different things; breaking/reforming of molecular bonds to produce heat and energy, compared to splitting or fusing atoms themselves, which releases FAR more energy than those molecular reactions since the bonds holding atomic nuclei together are so much stronger. If we say that a nuclear explosion is literally any explosion + radioisotopes, then you could buy some uranium online, tape it to a brick of plastic explosive, and say you’ve got yourself a nuke. Maybe someone should tell Iran they don’t need to waste all that money on centrifuges.

    You’re half right though, in that this probably is a response to Russia, but demonstrating your ability to detect underground nuclear tests is not at all the same thing as actually conducting one.





  • So I’m looking to finally build a dedicated plex server, instead of using my personal desktop, but I’m having a hard time deciding on components (for a tower). I would say 3 simultaneous 4k remote transcodes would be the goal.

    There are some 12/13600k and Arc A380 bundles on Newegg that have caught my eye; at the very least I think I’d like an A380 to ensure AV1 10-bit support for the future. Am I missing out by not hunting for the perfect deal on an old Xeon or something off of eBay? I’m not really familiar with server components, and I don’t know to what extent I would benefit from ECC RAM.

    I also figure that a hard drive array (RAID or Unraid) would be best, because it’ll be more than enough speed for my application and give me some data protection. But I could use some guidance on the exact best combo for video streaming.

    Finally, OS; I’m most familiar with Windows, but the I’m willing to try something Linux if there’s enough of a benefit
