I honestly get it to some degree. ~50% of threadiverse users are people banned from most of reddit and are the most hopelessly miserable and arrogant assholes to be around. On top of that, the main content feeds are overwhelmed with low effort memes that give the whole Threadiverse dead-internet vibes. Until the larger instances actually take steps to make themselves welcoming while creating space for real discussions I wouldn’t blame anyone checking out lemmy.world (or whatever) and just noping right back out like the grandpa Simpson meme.

I haven’t seen much arguing, it is unquestionably centralized and for profit. There truly is nothing unique about it.

I’m not an expert with the AT protocol but it really seems like what Dorsey and co have made is a super complicated protocol that (under specific conditions that cannot exist in the real world), has the potential to be federated in a meaningful way. That way they can steal all the talking points of the fediverse and muddy the meaning of words.

There are also a lot of people on Fedi who will seek out threads like these to explain how line 2532 of the AT protocol handbook explains how having 100% of users on a single server is actually decentralized but I’m sure they’re all authentic accounts.

Something I learned during the Vaxxhappened protest is just how many moderators are perfectly content to do these “jobs”. I found it honestly very sad how many of these what are ostensibly “community leaders” will happily acquiescence to the demands desires of the company as long as they can continue to do the job.

Don’t get me wrong I have a lot of sympathy for many of the moderators there who care deeply about their communities and providing a welcoming experience and feel stuck to Reddit, but until more of them grow a spine and idk, move to Lemmy or something like the top r/startrek and r/daystrominstaitute mods did (not me to be clear) then nothing of substance will change there. There is a seeming endless supply of people willing to clean up Reddit for free.

The most difficult parts of moderating on Reddit aren’t the trolls or spammers or even the rule-breakers, it’s identifying the accounts who intentionally walk the line of what’s appropriate.

IMO only a human moderator can recognize when someone is being a complete asshole but “doing it politely”, or trying to push an agenda or generally behaving inauthentically, because human moderators are (in theory) members of the community themselves and have an interest in that community being enjoyable to be a part of.

Humans are messy, and finding the right balance of mess to keep things interesting without making a place overwhelming to newcomers is a fine balance to strike that I just don’t believe an AI can do on it’s own.

My least favorite fun fact is that Reddit forced the KiA mod to reopen after they went private calling it a “cancer”.

I was a mod at the time and Reddit always told us we had an extreme degree of editorial independence (hence the justification for allowing r/jailbait, /greatawakening, r/coontown etc) but that event made me consider for the first time that exposing normies to propaganda might not just be a side-effect, but a core function of the company.

Because Mastodon is Twitter without the possibility of an Elon Musk and Lemmy/Piefed is Reddit without the possibility of a Steve Huffman. You clearly feel that you can do better than the collective efforts of the ActivityPub devs so I am rooting for you!

“Lemmy” is actually not a platform like Reddit, it’s software and the network of instances running that software is decentralized (Lemmy uses the ActivityPub protocol) meaning each instance is operated by a different person (or group). There are also other similar softwares like Piefed and mBin that work pretty well with Lemmy. That is all to say that if an Admin or Mod is “getting fascisty” you can block that instance, join another, or even create your own. That’s the beauty of ActivityPub!

While TrueNAS is great I found it to be significantly more NAS-oriented than a general “home server”. It’s certainly capable just very into the weeds with permissions, users, groups, etc. It’s not very noob friendly. If you aren’t primarily dealing with a ton of data, you might want to look into something like CasaOS or Homarr which make sharing data on the network very “set it and forget it” and are more focused on apps.

Also recommendations include PiHole, Immich, Qbittorrent, Plex (or Jellyfin) obviously, SyncThing, Duplicati, Home Assistant (although you probably want to run that in a VM) and Tailscale and NGINX proxy manager for accessing outside the house.

They are very noisy. Lots of clicking and whirring. Enterprise drives are not the same as consumer drives. As others have said this is a great price but I would not recommend using them in a room you are trying to focus in.

They generate a LOT of noise. Not a dealbreaker for most but something to be aware of for sure.

Can you provide any examples of ads someone (maybe you?) received directly due to Apple’s policies and behavior? Totally serious question.

If you use an iPhone and have app tracking transparency enabled then any targeted ads you’re seeing are almost certainly coming from data that Apple has collected from you.

A few years back Apple made a big change to iOS that prevents user data from being sold to data brokers and ran a big ad campaign about how they are the good “privacy option”. But the reason they made the change was not to protect user privacy, but because Apple wanted the money that Facebook was getting from iPhone users. The same data is still being collected and sold, just by Apple now instead of Facebook. That was the crux of Facebook’s big lawsuit against Apple accusing them of anti-competitive practices.

Apple is one of the best Hardware companies out there for not selling your data.
