I’m not on any of the services currently, but I have tried Mastodon in the past and point 4. was what made me bounce off it. I know Mastodon flaunts its algorithm-free feed as almost a point of pride, but as a user it just doesn’t do it for me. I could not get it to serve me the type of content I wanted the way I wanted, and it just felt like way too much work for what I was looking for.
So does Lemmy, to an extent. It doesn’t support microblogs directly, but Mastodon users can post to a community by @-ing it and can reply to comments on Lemmy, and we can reply to their replies and posts.

I’m not on .world so I wasn’t aware, but that is a solid idea by them and a good suggestion! I’d specifically want to promote this community too while at it, as I’ve found many good smaller communities to subscribe to from this bot.
I love these posts and almost wish something like them was integrated into the base Lemmy UI to help with discoverability.

It’s really a shame since interoperability is such (theoretical) benefit of ActivityPub, but what can you do.
I’m fairly sure I was able to comment on Lemmy threads while experimenting with Firefish like a year ago - though it of course struggled with displaying threaded content.
All good suggestions. Multi-communities has been requested for a long time and would help combat the userbase split across for example gaming communities @lemmy.world and @sh.itjust.works.
Subscribing to individual threads would make following ongoing discussion much less tedious than it is now.

I’ll keep an eye on Iceshrimp. I always wanted to like Mastodon, but the chronological feed never did it for me - I think I’ve been spoiled by algorithms. Antennas in Firefish seemed like a decent compromise.
I also wish there was an app that let me browse/post/comment on Lemmy using a Firefish/Iceshrimp account so I could theoretically consolidate accounts.
I always thought anonymous voting was preferable, or at least non-public. I don’t want “why did you downvote me bro!?”-arguments to occur, and I don’t want to know who approves of my comments or not. I think thinking of votes as an amorphous blob representing general public opinion on Lemmy is preferable to getting into the weeds of who exactly likes your posts and comments.
We could also have “karma” on Lemmy, but while technically tracked the environment is better off without it being public in my opinion. I view voting records similarly.
If botting becomes enough of an issue that regular users need to report vote manipulation bots I’ll be fine with conceding my stance.
I remember being really intrigued by Firefish a while back, but after attempting to use it a bit it was clearly not ready for casual everyday use. What’s the status on it/its forks? Does anyone use any of it, and have any recommendations?

How about this: as you scroll past an entire comment in the chain (the bottom of the comment leaves the top of the screen) the entire comment chain is shifted to the left?
I can’t think of a solution that isn’t re-rooting in one form or another. Do you know of any app that has done it differently?
The spoiler tag issue is an especially big problem as it comes up a lot. I still can’t let go of Sync as it looks and feels the best, but it would be nice if this stuff got fixed.

Does following a community spam your feed with every reply to every thread in that community, or just with new posts?
