  • One important thing for people to think about right now is “what happens when other countries don’t accept deportees?”

They start to stack up. Housing, feeding, and guarding “dangerous undesirables” is expensive.

Surely, it would be patriotic to save your country money…

It might be too late. It might not, who’s to say. Videos from this weekend have a very familiar ring to them though.

  • I’m gonna be pedantic for just a sec cause I want to share my visualization with you:

    Isle - small island

Aisle - row of shelves typically housing objects like groceries or books, etc.

That caused me to think about a small archipelago that could fit in a neighborhood that consisted of different ethnic or national peoples hawking foods. Like large swimming pools with floating stands manned by someone yelling “get your Twinkies here! Twinkies!”

    I’m crying.

  • I like propublica and democracy now, but when you start talking about foundations, it’s hard to know, they’re basically all funded at least at some point by a billionaire.

That’s kind of the thing that happens at least in the US, you either are big enough that some foundation gives you money, cause you actually need a lot of it to exist here, or you are so small that you can’t cover the kinds of stories the other guys can.

This system is designed such that journalism not ruined by the need to be profitable is relegated to the whims of patrons, much like art in feudal Europe.

  • So, do what you need to do for your family. But I’ll say this. I spent time looking into this last go round because I knew Biden was a temporary reprieve. I’m the parent of a trans kid, we did not leave the country for several reasons.

The entire western world is experiencing this dramatic rise in fascism. There’s no guarantee that you will actually avoid this long term.

Many countries (especially the UK) have draconian immigration rules, see above note about fascism.

We ultimately decided to move to a blue state, from a red one, primarily for safety reasons, and made it happen over a couple years. We are far happier in this situation and are now able to help extract other loved ones from similar situations.

Again, do what you need to do for yours and your family’s safety, but you’re in for a tough go of it regardless of what you choose.

ETA: I went as far as interviewing for some jobs in Canada after building my immigration profile and starting the job search in NZ.

  • Given the history of outside influences on Haiti, I’m not sure how much of this story I buy.

Could be “violent gangs” torching “civil society” for “their own benefit”.

Could be “revolutionaries” torching “an oppressive oligarchy” for “the benefit of working people”.

Both of them would be reported the same way in US, or European newspapers.

I’m just skeptical when I see “violent gangs” taking over public infrastructure and when one of the “first casualties” of a “bloody uprising” is the Prime Minister who is not in fact dead, just forced to resign and flee the country.
