Does a lawyer need to ask for a payment just for advice ?

Also what’s the alternative you suggest?

Trusting random people online for legal advice ?

Actually if you live in a college town, it’s not terribly hard to make friends with a lawyer in training. Also, Consultation is a thing. I can’t imagine that asking for advice could be expensive.

What a garbage take. A tiny percentage of towns are college towns and even then many won’t have law programs. I lived in a college town for 12 years and didn’t meet lawyers in training
