I am an IT guy, so my needs, preferences and priorities are not the norm.

IMHO software is mostly a shit-show, doesn’t matter if property or FOSS. My most loved target of critique is macOS/Apple, because the user experience is so bad for me. (Forced by my work to use it, so I have several years of experience/suffering with it.)

I think it is more about finding software which works by accident (or your training/prior knowledge), as you expect it should work. The biggest problem with proprietary software is that they usually need to up sell, dump down features (hello, macOS window management, finder and everything else) or want to force you into their walled garden.

One easy example where FOSS kicks ass compared to proprietary is managing/installing and updating software: Linux and the BSDs have all sane centrally managed systems for native packages and Flatpaks/Snaps, compare that to the shit-show on Windows and macOS devices. Don’t let me start on provisioning and other topics, where FOSS is by now decades ahead of the stuff one sees in macOS/windows.

One proprietary system which works awesome is Steam and SteamDeck. No questions there and I’ll happily throw my money at Valve.

I had the pleasure of working with great UX designers, but you are sorry out of luck if you are not the persona they target and their decisions are guided by making money and making their manager happy, so a good user experience is at most their 3rd concern, if you are lucky.

Concerning documentation I fully agree with you, with very few exceptions (Arch WIKI, FreeBSD handbook, RHELs documentation), the FOSS world is a sad place.

In the end, there is the potential for great UX in both proprietary and FOSS systems, but when you want to focus on user centric, FOSS wins IMHO for IT guys because they are the only systems which are literally build by their users.

• Learn a proper tooth brushing technique (Bass, Stillman, etc.)
• Floss
• Strength training 2x a week
• Get some daylight every day
• Have great manners all the time
• Be nice and respectful to people around you (especially the ones you don’t benefit from)
• Read the classic books in literature and your field of work
• Get a hobby and follow it with discipline
• Go to the free health checkups that are provided to you
• Save early and regularly
• Plan your next day, week, month, year
• Have some fun and spent yourself from time to time on your own terms - YOLO ;-)

• I will very happily pay a service which is not shitty, not region locked, doesn’t annoy me with advertisement and is reasonably priced. The illegal sites are demonstrating that it is possible to sustain such an offer on advertisement alone. Don’t give me fucking bullshit that it is not possible for companies like Netflix while most of the subscription fees are going to shareholders and higher management instead into creating new content

A phone is a tool which should enable you to do stuff. Be passionate about friends, hobbies, art, not a piece of plastic.

Being forced to use iOS (work phone) and Android (Samsung, also work), both suck IMHO but Android sucks less.

My next Android will be a Pixel, as others suggested custom roms are the way to go, but even vanilla Android is more functional/open/practical for my needs than iOS.

I would never buy Apples shit with my own money: Dumped down, locked down and in the end you are renting a device from Apple to pay fees for their Appstore and Cloud offerings and vendor lock in. No thanks.

I assume the hard drive is ok: I also have some git repositories on the drive and the checksums for git are correct. Every other file on the drive is ok, so cryptolocker malware could have only been on my phone at that time.

Perhaps for perspective, because ‘rich’ is relative and I am always surprised how hard it is to forget that every person/class lives in a world of their own.

When I was studying, I had to work to support myself, coming from a working class background. My whole time at the university was like visit mandatory courses, study, work and use weekends to study some more/do classwork. My parents could neither help me financially or with advice.

I meet a study friend from a normal ‘middle class’ background on the street. He would spent many weekends to do short trips, go sailing, visit family, … perfectly fine and I am happy he could afford to live like that. During our conversation he mentioned casually, that he was going on a multi week vacation, because ‘Sometimes you just need to get out and see something else.’. He didn’t mean it in bad faith, I just felt like shit because at that time I haven’t had vacation for multiple years.

Now, I am perfectly fine with my friend living a good life. What really gets to me, though, is that for example the middle class takes all their privileges for granted and nowadays you can suddenly read in newspapers discussions, if it is still worth to go work if you cannot even afford to buy your own flat/house. Where I live, working class couldn’t afford to buy a flat/house for decades now, but there was never a discussion whether it would still be worth for the working class to work. The discussion is more about how to force the working class to work more for less.

Just to be more specific, from your link the operations with operands from low registers “zpg zeropage OPC $LL operand is zeropage address (hi-byte is zero, address = $00LL)” looks like exactly the stuff I am interested in. It seems to me, that they are like 256 (slower) pseudo registers.

I would also assume, that at least 1-3 registers are ‘always’ in a CPU, like instruction pointer, top of stack for stack machines or for modern CPUs frame pointers.

For the NES, as far as I understand, you can also operate on the lower memory addresses with the CPU by simply referring to their address.

In the end, what triggered my question is the (banal) insight, that one actually does not need registers from computer science point of view and I am wondering if there are any implementations.

(Obviously for speed reasons alone one wants registers…)

I loved the original book. I just think it’s unfilmable. A lot of it is about getting inside peoples heads to hear their thoughts and machinations.

I found the art direction, costuming, and casting of Lynch’s movies brilliant. Even the soundtrack was a nice surprise.

I really enjoyed the first 3 Dune books for the peoples heads. For me, Dune loses its direction a little bit later, in the following books.

I also totally enjoyed Lynch’s movie, quite bold and an experience.

I was not too impressed by the cinematography, the pictures are nice, but nothing compared to the like of ‘Drive’ (… and Drive has basically no story, but I will enjoy it from time for time for its beautiful cinematography and soundtrack), ‘Pan’s labyrinth’ or the first season of True Detective.
